I was going to make this long post recapping my year but I suddenly remembered Eurovision and realized it was pretty much the best thing that happened. It all started when I was chatting with my buddy who nonchalantly announced "I'm excited, Eurovision's tonight!" It was an event for sure. As a stupid American I don't get to see these things except through the wonders of the internet, so watching it live with my buddy was my fondest memory of 2010. That and Nouvelle Star. And playing BlazBlue. And basically the fact that he came back, which was the best birthday present I got!
It didn't take long at all for hijinks to ensue this year at Eurovision.
A man who calls himself Jimmy Jump interrupts Spain's performance...Somehow. Then another dude in a suit runs onto the scene, but turns out he's supposed to be there. I don't know how the performers managed to go on without even missing a beat, but due to the interruption they were allowed to try again the right way. The twist however is that whoever wins Eurovision always gets to perform at the end of the show, so I hoped by some miracle Spain would win and bring the grand total up to 3 times but sadly that didn't happen.
"Saxguy" is clearly the winner of all things, despite the results of the contest stating otherwise.
Super sentai robot becomes a human. Need I say more than that, really?
Besides the fact that this is clearly a fierce sausage fest, the song is catchy as hell. Thanks for putting up with me cheering "OPA!" throughout the rest of the show. And I still want that OPA! ringtone-sound that plays at the end.
When this song played he said "This is so France". I'm not sure what being French entails exactly, but somehow I'm inclined to believe him. Singing "ALLEZ OLLA OLÉ" is second only to "OPA!" in terms of catchiness. (Thanks for putting up with that too, by the way.)
Just another typical day here at Eurovision! Magical flute guy summons pyrotechnics and conjures a fruit tree while some guy dances with pottery in the background. Plus, there's a hidden apricot stone in the girl's hand. Eurovision!
There's nothing special about this one, it's just no secret at this point that generic techno is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Last but not least,
I can't decide whether I want to laugh or love this or both. I settled with "both". It almost looks like 'Peter Nalitch & Friends' are mocking the more theatrical competitors, yet it feels genuine at the same time. He seems so unassuming, too. It's kind of charming. At least watch until two minutes in when he has an impromptu conversation with his band-mate over a "photo" (spoiler: it's actually a drawing). Later they turn on the wind machine for extra dramatic flair, literally ending on a high note.
This is for you, Peter Nalitch & Friends. You touched my heart.
THEN THE WHOLE AUDIENCE DANCED. THEN SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF EUROPE DANCED. IT WAS MAGICAL
Other good stuff that happened:
ElectricalBeast, the lovable child-like Let's Player who puts a smile on every face he meets (or perhaps confusion, but the smile comes eventually),
finishes Super Mario 64 after 2 years of no updates. "Farewell, my good friend Mario..." *CRIES*
Christmas, while initially depressing, later revealed itself to be special to me. In the past it's been about family, but my family didn't really celebrate. Christmas kind of felt dead to me in that aspect, and I still hate the commercialization of it--there's no heart from a TV saying Merry Christmas to you. But I felt really loved by my friends this year. I hope you all know how much I appreciate you no matter what day it is.
...And probably some other stuff happened that I can't remember! But 2011 is going to be an awesome year, 'cause I'm going to make it awesome. Well, for myself anyway. Maybe I can make it awesome for you in some small way, though. I'll try!
