Hmm...

This entry is posted out of order. It is posted out of order because I know you all, like me, read your friends page from most recent to last read, and so the survey I post after this will be read first. As such, if you haven't read that survey, I'd like you to skip to it and come back to this post so I don't bias your votes.

Personally, I really love those works of fiction that tie together lots of little details and come together in startling ways that you'd never expect. As a result, my five favorite authors are intimately tied to my five favorite works of fiction, all of which I feel are in a league of their own --- and it's the same league for all five of them. They are, in no particular order

1. Anne Bishop The Black Jewels Trilogy
2. Lois McMaster Bujold Paladin of Souls
3. Patricia McKillip Riddle-Master
4. Neil Gaiman Sandman
5. J. Michael Straczynski Babylon 5

"Wait!" you scream. "Those aren't novels!" Yes, I have chosen a novel, two trilogies, a comic series, and a five-year TV show. Yes, it isn't fair. Yes, I am putting them all in the same league. You may have a differing opinion, but this is what I feel is the best works of fiction that I've ever read/seen/run across. Possibly there's some anime that I missed.
