Randy went to parole yesterday to check in and discovered that he was discharged on October 26th, one year after coming home. He was supposed to be on until August 1st, 2013 but was released on merit for exceptional behavior. He hasn’t had a single dirty urine or violated any conditions of his release.
I can’t express how proud I am of him. For those of you who don’t know, my husband is an alcoholic. Those of you who have known me know that it hasn’t been an easy (almost) 6 years together. We’ve gone through 2 prison sentences (one for larceny while drunk, another for a high speed chase while drunk) for a total of a little over 2 years incarcerated. We split up for a brief period from May 2010 until August 2010. Something in me told me to fight it out and stand by his side, even though logic and many friends and family said to run in the other direction as fast as possible.
Now I can look at him and smile from ear to ear with pride. He is the man, husband and father I knew that he could be all along. He works 56 hours a week doing manual labor milking on a farm (which took him 8 months to find a company that would hire a convicted felon). He supports us financially and emotionally. He is my husband and best friend. He has come SO far and I am SO proud of him. Every day is a struggle not to take a drink or fall back into old behaviors but he is strong enough to make the choice to stay sober. Now? We take things using the same ideology as AA, one day at a time.
