She is a chocobo. They are used in my world for terrain-riding and in carriage lines.

[the chocobo straightens up and whistles loudly, raking the dirt with her claws; it makes a small smile pass across Sephiroth's face]

Not many things exist that are harmless. But this one's a warbird, fiercer than most. They stand and fight with you where others might run.

Ah... [Looking at that chocobo with extreme suspicion before wandering closer]

I'm James. [Offers his paw and a grin as he changes into sort of snow leopard thing with orange spots]

[you get a startled whistle from the chocobo at the abrupt change so close by, and a raised eyebrow from Sephiroth.

He smooths the puffed feathers on the chocobo's neck with his left hand, and grasps the paw solemnly to shake with his right]

Sephiroth. You are a shapeshifter, then?

[he pauses as the chocobo nudges her way closer urging him for a good petting]

[the words are deadpan, he knows exactly how he looks holding back a giant bird eager for a good skritching]
