Monk (although to be honest, it sort of jumped the shark for me shortly after Sharona left and they brought in Natalie), Psyche, and my newest fanboy obsession: Burn Notice.
Jeffrey Donovan, playing his best and coolest borderline psychotic since the short-lived Touching Evil teamed up with the Man-Stud himself, Bruce Campbell. Seriously, how can you go wrong?
Donovan's an ex-spy who's been blacklisted (given a "burn notice") by an unknown person or group, essentially quarantined in Miami without his accounts, passports, or any papers, and the FBI is tailing him to make sure he stays in plain sight and doesn't try to leave. His old buddy (Bruce Campbell) ends up assisting him on odd jobs to try and raise some living money under the table while he's trying to get rid of the burn notice. Add in an old lover who's also a borderline psychotic ex-IRA terrorist and who has bad blood with Campbell, and you've got all the makings of a fine, fine action comedy. Oh yeah, and let's not forget Sharon Gless, the most manipulative momma since Lidia Soprano.
(Don't think I missed Bruce Campbell identifying himself and the ex-IRA gal as "officers Cagney and Lacey" in that last episode. Nice homage to Gless there.)
Calm VO commentary on basic spy tricks or insights given with his perfectly dry delivery on such ideas as getting rid of that unwanted drug dealer living downstairs, the best way to mock-up a fake mail bomb to get your ex-boss to call you, how to wreak havoc on some bastard swindler robbing old women of their money; all of it good advice that I plan on keeping in mind in case I even need it some day.
For those of you who dig the action comedy spy show with sarcasm, explosions, and gunfire; or for those of you like me who just want to see Bruce Campbell in yet another role that he seems born to play; or for those of you who miss the main character in Touching Evil and want a James Bondian version of the same guy, played by the same actor, then this show is for you.
Err, as long as you have the USA Network.
Thursdays at 10, people!
