Downton Abbey Christmas Special

Ok, so I finally had chance to watch it last night and I was definitely not happy with the ending - but I’ll come to that later.

Firstly, I just want to say that as a whole, I quite liked the Christmas special. It was nowhere near as perfect as the last, and I wasn’t too keen on setting it in summer, but for the most part, it was good.

At the end of series 3, I felt like the show still had potential. It wasn't as crisp and bright and brilliant as series 1, but the potential was still there and I did want another series for it to redeem that magic.

There were still places the story could go and, though it was tinged with the sadness of Sybil's death, there was hope for the future.

Now, after they've killed off Matthew, they've killed off that hope for me too. I agree, the show definitely loses something without Matthew. Not just for his character, but what he represents and his relationship with Mary. The start of the story was really him becoming the heir and killing him off just feels like it should be the end of the story.

And I agree, such a violent end, after everything else he's been through, does taint the whole show really.

Basically, I think they should have decided that, with Matthew leaving and the series only designed to be 3 series, the Christmas special should have been the end.

For me though, the biggest thing is that I can't just be happy knowing that my OTP of OTPs gets to live happily ever after. After everything they've been put through, they deserved it.

So yes, I will watch series 4, but I think it will take a lot to bring it even close to the standards we're used to.
