A Downton Abbey Christmas!

Nov 11, 2011 17:20

Ok, so I had an idea this morning of a really fun storyline for the Christmas special! I'm tempted to write a fanfic about it, but I've already got 6 other stories I need to really finish first! LOL! (If anyone else wants to have a go, feel free, just let me know!).

Ok, so it's just pure specualtion here and obviously it contains spoilers from series 1 and 2. But hopefully this doesn't sound too far fetched - though it is a little overdramatic and tongue in the cheek at times. But hey, this is Downton Abbey, they get away with anything!

So, here's what I think would be really cool. The show picks up in mid autumn - Bates' trial is all underway and Mary's wedding to Carlisle has been delayed, out of respect for Lavinia.

Matthew, being a solicitor (convenient huh?), has been defending Bates in the trail (foreshadowing from when Bates was helping him when he was injured?). He, of course, ends up finding out about the secret Vera had - the Pamuk scandal - and learns about the contract she had with Carlisle. He then puts two and two together and realises that the scandal is true and that Mary is marrying Carlisle to keep the scandal underwraps (it all makes sense now to Matthew!). Now, Matthew is pretty shocked to learn about Mary and Pamuk, but it was so long ago and so much has happened - he understands the difference between the things that matter, and the things that don't...

Of course, Matthew can't let Mary marry someone because of blackmail so he has a word with her about it all and offers to marry her instead - to minimise the scandal. By this point, of course, Matthew has had time to grieve and a nice chat with Isobel made him realise that Lavinia's dying wish was for him to be happy and that she's basically given him and Mary her blessing. And, of course, by now he knows that Mary does love him, so it'll be better all round if Mary marries him, not Carlisle.

Obviously, Mary agrees and decides to risk Carlisle printing the story (I mean, what damage can it really do now? Sybil is already married to the ex chaffeur and Edith is well, Edith - she'll have anyone!). She tells Carlisle she's getting shot of him and he is not at all happy! He starts to threaten Mary and Matthew, who's been standing guard outside, rushes in to stop Carlisle. Now, in a jealous rage (cause I swear, that man must have a temper in him!) he spurts forth all this stuff about Mary being a fallen woman and Matthew is all, "yeah, I don't care, you cannot treat her this way!"

Now, this next bit gets even more melodramatic, but hey, this is Downton Abbey! Basically Carlisle takes a swing at Matthew and Matthew (who we know from series 1 can throw a punch), dodges and swings at Carlisle instead! Carlisle then starts to threaten Matthew now, but by this point, half the house is in the room and Lord Grantham's all like, "yeah, mate, we have bucket loads of witnesses to say you threw the first punch AND threatened my daughter and I am an Earl and you're not - haha! Now, get out of my house before I call the police!"

Carlisle knows he lost, so he stomps out shouting threats about revealing Mary's secret and Robert is like, "what secret?" Everyone sort of looks shifty and Cora takes him by the arm and leads him away to tell him all... Now, because Robert is so happy that Matthew (who is like a son to him) is marrying his daughter (who is ya, know, actually his daughter!) and that the estate will be saved, he's not too fussed about Mary's scandal after all. In fact, he instead writes to Carlisle and makes a few things very clear - that if Carlisle does indeed print this story, he'll make sure everyone knows about the connection of Carlise to Vera (and then any possible implication with Vera's death) and the rage he was in Robert's house, (make any connection now if you will!). So Carlisle, not being completely without common sense, decides to not print the story. Of course, even more people around London know about the rumours of Mary's scandal, but a nice annoucement of her upcoming marriage to the future Earl of Grantham helps smooth things over rather.

So then, back to our favourite couple! Mary is even more impressed that her sea monster has become Perseus and of course teases him about it! Matthew, who is determined to marry her before anything else goes wrong, decides that their wedding should take place as soon as possible. Mary obviously agrees and so things are set in motion for their wedding! Now, as her wedding to Carlisle was fast approaching anyway, (and due to the rumours the family knows a quickish marrige is best for Mary) there's a lot less to organise (Mrs Patmore has already made the wedding cake by now, so she's happy!).

So, whilst I doubt it'll be on the exact same date, Mary and Matthew's wedding can happen soon, around Christmas time and we get our lovely Christmas wedding for them!!

Oh and obviously, because the Christmas special supposedly ends on a cliffhanger - Bates' trial suddenly encounters difficulties and Matthew (during his wedding reception of course) gets told and he has to rush down to London to stop Bates swining by the neck and Robert, with all the drama that has happened recently, goes down with a sudden illness (did they know the symptoms of heart attacks then?) at the reception and cue the wonderful Downton Abbey theme...

HEHE! So, ok, my idea is a bit silly in places, but I hoped you liked it all the same!

I'd love to know what you think about the likelihood of these events taking place! It is meant to be somewhat humourous by the way!
