Author's Notes: Another update and someone just got back. Who do you think it is and what is his role in this series eh?
Posting a recap here because I know I’m taking long in updating things so I hope this will help you get back to the track (dedicated to
renchan27. Nurufufufu):
- Nino is a thief, playfully called Lupin. Ohno is a policeman. Sho is a heir who wanted to try teaching and Aiba is veterinarian who is taking a second course in fashion design.
- Ohno was assigned to protect a jewel named Black Rose which is suspected to be the next target of the Lupin he met in an encounter. Sho was taking chance in doing teaching for cram and there he met his two students, Aiba and Nino.
- Both Sho and Ohno then was invited by their friend, Jun, to have a night out together. There Sho met again his student and Ohno properly met Nino who he chance to meet earlier when he was investigating his task.
- Nino didn’t hide the fact that he was interested with Ohno, and same goes to Aiba to Sho. Nino took Ohno to the dance floor the left them ditching their friends and had their own steamy night together. Sho was babbling too much, not used with that kind of environtment which led Aiba shutting him up wuth a kiss that ended up with a make out.
- Nino admitted he love Ohno but left as soon as he woke up the next morning. He went directly to Aiba’s place where he found out that his cram school teacher spend the night at Aiba’s place and tease the teacher non-stop. Aiba and Nino was teasing each other and Nino revealed that Ohno was the cop who he encountered in his last heist. Nino then reminisce the time he first met Aiba and then it was also revealed that Aiba was his partner in crime.
- Ohno wanted to find Nino because he couldn’t leave it at that as a one-night-stand and he knew himself there was connection between them. He looked for Nino’s records while also looking at the case files assigned to him. Toma then warned someone that Ohno, as a cop, was getting to close too close in Nino’s radar.
- Sho invited Ohno for a drinks but the cop ditch it when he found Nino , chasing him and when he lost Nino, he chose to go Nino’s place that he found in Nino’s record files.
- Sho who was drinking alone decided to just go home until he was found by Aiba who dragged somewhere because Nino wasn’t available.
- Nino was surprised when he saw Ohno waiting for him outside his doorstep and he let the other finally in, trying to put Ohno off by saying he could give him sex if he wanted him. For some reason, Ohno could see right through him. Nino then remembered the time he really first met Ohno and it was one summer ages ago when they were both kids. But as he expected, Ohno doesn’t remember him because of the accident Ohno met when he was responding to a crime as a police student. He finally gives in and let Ohno enter his life again despite knowing Ohno was a cop and he was a thief.
- Sho and Aiba were in the hill where Nino and Aiba would spend some time. Aiba talked about his life and urged Sho to do the same. Sho then shared that he was a heir and everything should be perfect even if he loosed himself. Aiba then coaxed him of accepting who he was and Sho did, admitting that he did have attraction towards his student,
- Sho and Aiba started going out, with the help of Ohno’s advice that before he could be a good son, he should be true to his self. Sho wanted to try it and Aiba is willing to wait but then statuses and how different the two of them are. Because he doesn’t want to lose Aiba, he finally said out loud that he loved him and he didn’t want to lose him.
- Ohno on the other hand kept remembering his memories and about a boy who he met one summer. He didn’t remember the face but he knew he was someone important.
-------------------------------------------
"When did you get back eh?" Toma asked the other patron of the bar he frequented as he arrived. He just came from the police station when he got the message that he and the only customer of the bar now aside from him needed to meet and Toma suggested to meet here.
The other already had the mouth of the champagne glass against his lips, sipping at it before he put it down to check his watch.
"As of now, I arrived back at Tokyo almost two hours ago." He said before leaving his body in the counter and observed the silence of the bar. Toma greeted the bartender along his way and ordered the usual. When they were left alone, Toma then put his attention back to the other guy.
“So, what’s up? How’s business?” Toma asked.
“Same old same old.” The other patron replied nonchalant, clearly bored but Toma didn’t really take it the bad way. Maybe he still had a jet lag. But then this man, his friend, who he had known to be workaholic and so maybe it wasn’t the time to be too lax right now. There must be a reason why he was called here the moment his friend arrived at Tokyo.
“So why call all of a sudden? This isn’t some kind of out of the blue reunion right?” Toma asked when he got his drink and the other man smirked, showing amusement.
“I just got intrigued when you called me last time. Say that again?” The other man said and Toma made a sound of recognition as he downed his drink.
“Ah, I said your friend is entering Nino’s radar.” Toma repeated.
“How so?”
“I dunno. I found Ohno-san in the records section of the office and for some reason Nino’s file was out in the open.”
“He’s checking on him?”
Toma contemplated first before answering, “In a sense, yes. I’m not particularly sure in what aspect Ohno-san is checking Nino’s file though.” He gulped again his drink and then added in an afterthought, “But then Ohno-san is also checking case files regarding Ni-, Lupin’s heists so that’s a bit alarming.”
The other man considered Toma’s words before sipping again his drink and then declared, “I guess I need to check on Nino too. He’s taking time in planning to steal the Black Rose too and that’s unusual.”
Toma looked up at his friend and then nodded. Knowing that Nino was given an assignment, Toma did thought that Nino might strike as soon as possible but now, it was almost a month since the last heist and Nino wasn’t even moving a finger, not even a sign of Aiba trying to access anything. He should know since he usually monitored the heist, just to make sure that those two won’t leave a trail. Not that those two were careless even with the simple things but Toma was just making sure that the police side would be completely clueless regarding it. Now that reminds him, Ohno was the one who actually caught Nino on act and that was why he was being extra watchful to his colleague because he may not look like it but Toma was well aware that Ohno was the most capable one in their department.
“You think Ohno-san caught up with him already?” Toma then asked his friend.
“I’m not sure. He may not look like it but Ohno-kun could do a lot of wonders when you least expected it.”
Toma nodded, agreeing to his friend’s statement. After another sip, he glanced at his friend and then asked when he saw how his friend gulped down the remains of his drink and stood up, “Where you going?”
“To visit someone.” Toma raised an eyebrow and his friend just smirked at him, “Just put everything in my tab.” The man said towards the bartender before patting Toma’s back and leaving. Toma pouted but shrugged it off later and continued drinking. “Nice seeing you again…” He murmured to no one in particular.

( “Mama?”
“…”
“Mama, I’m hungry.”
“Go away!”
“Mama?”
“Don’t touch me!”
“Mama? What did I do? I-”
“Shut up! You insolent child!”
“Mama, what did I do? Why are you mad?”
“Because of you, I wasn’t able to achieve it. Because you came, I needed to live with that bastard!”
“Mama…”
“Don’t call me that.” )
It was dawn when Nino found himself waking up. Voices were ringing in his head, causing his head to ache and most especially, his heart. Tears were already clouding his eyes but he still found himself up, managing to put on a pair of boxers and a t-shirt. He instantly went to the bathroom near the living room and out of the bedroom, trying to muffle his cries as he could. He didn’t want to wake Ohno up with this kind of things.
He was facing the sink the moment he arrived there, splashing water to his face before griping the edge of the sink and looking right through the mirror. Water was dripping from his hair sticking in his forehead, tears and maybe snot were already mixing together yet Nino careless about it. He only found himself seeing images of his childhood, of trying to run away because he didn’t have anywhere to run to, trying to live day by day all by himself in that house because he could never call it his home, not when no one wanted him there. A flash of accident that happened just after the trip his family had when he thought they had a chance, of him living in the streets and not knowing where to go, the first time he needed to steal something to live, of meeting Aiba in unusual circumstances and then meeting Ohno again after so many years and the latter accepted him despite not knowing anything much from him.
There was another splash of water against his face, just to wake him up from this nightmare that was his memories. It wasn’t time to dwell on this. Not now, please. He pleaded to his self. He took a lungful of deep breath just to calm everything in his shaking body and when he did, he splashed another handful of water against his face before getting a towel in the rack beside the sink. He was sure, Ohno wouldn’t mind.
He was walking back towards Ohno’s bedroom, drying his face and his hair when he noticed another room open, a room he didn’t notice when he went to the bathroom just now and he was sure, Ohno hadn’t really take him there (Well, if there was actually a time to tour Ohno’s house because they practically jumped to each other the moment they got in the apartment).
He gasped at the sight, paintings and figurines were all lined carefully in racks and in the floor. Different colors and sizes, all so alive despite the stillness and then as the center of all of it, there stood a painting, still unfinished but almost complete, and so beautiful that it hurt.
Nino hated himself, losing his self with tears and too much emotions when he knew being a thief didn’t required any of it. Only control and tactics were needed but then he lose it the moment it had to do with Ohno.
He walked towards the center, tears already visible in his eyes. Carefully he touched the canvass, caressing it hesitantly because he couldn’t still believe it. He just couldn’t believe it.
“Kazu…”
Strong arms already roamed its way on his waist and despite the urge not to cry anymore, Nino was a sobbing mess again.
Ohno turned him around and stubborn as Nino could be, Ohno still managed to turn the younger male to look at him. He cupped both of Nino’s faced just to make him look at him. “Kazu, look at me.” Ohno said while giving Nino a peck in the lips once in a while.
“Kazu, look at me~” Ohno said again and Nino shook his head.
“Please, look at me.” Ohno almost pleaded because he couldn’t understand why Nino was crying now. He looked around the room and all he could see were his paintings and figurines he usually do in his break aside from fishing. And then his vision passed through Nino’s shoulder, seeing the painting in the middle. It was Nino’s painting and he was supposed to give it to the electronics student for graduation since Nino would be graduating his master’s degree soon and he wanted it to be special so he was adding a few more details about it.
“You don’t like it?” He asked, and Nino shook his head which left the police officer disappointed until he heard Nino’s faint follow up.
“I loved it.”
Ohno smiled but then Nino’s tears weren’t stop pouring. So then, maybe it was him.
“Am I too rough last night? I thought you enjoyed it rough sex from time to time.” Ohno unconsciously said with worry on his face. Ohno’s eyes widened in realization a second later and then when he looked straight to Nino’s eyes, Nino was staring straight back at him.
“Ah~ I mean…” Ohno tried to find his words, sheepish and quite embarrass especially when he let go of Nino’s face. Nino did stop crying though, his sobs turned into sniffs so it was a good sign. Well, somehow. He moved back a bit, quite taken back and before Ohno knew it, Nino was laughing loudly.
Ohno blinked his eyes, scratching the back of his head and dumbfounded. But he was relieved that Nino had stop crying and that was okay. And then Nino just came in jumping into him, arms around his neck and legs around his waist. With his reflex, Ohno did manage to catch Nino, holding him tight around his waist so the younger male wouldn’t fall.
“Thank you.” Nino smiled, his eyes locked towards Ohno’s and Ohno had seen those eyes that was so beautiful, deep yet shallow, warm and enticing. Before he could drown with those eyes, Ohno was engaged in a passionate kiss that was so full of emotions and when Nino finally let go, Ohno could swear that not for the fact that he was carrying Nino right now, he might actually swooned on his own.
“Thank you.” Nino repeated and Ohno didn’t have a single clue how much that meant to Nino.
Nino gave another peck in Ohno’s lips before hiding his face in the crook of Ohno’s necks, loving the milky sent it always gave off. Nino put down his legs, his arms now around Ohno’s waist as Ohno’s hands were tightly around the former’s waist.
Ohno wasn’t still sure what made Nino cry and it was a mystery he wanted to solve but he couldn’t do it unless Nino would let him. Nino was a mystery himself after all and Ohno wanted for Nino to open up for him but it seemed impossible for now and all he could do was to wait. Ohno’s eyes then landed on the painting again in the middle of his art room.
Sometimes, he wished it was like painting. Because it was easier to paint and draw the beauty you see in the subject you were painting.
And Ohno learned the hard way how painting was much easier than bringing down the walls the man build around himself and not letting him in at all.
Ohno had seen the signs already, with all the not-so-subtle avoidance, the excuses when he suddenly visited Nino after work. Since he needed to finish reports that began to pile and Nino had his thesis still, he didn’t get to spend much time with Nino.
Kisses were becoming less and less, excuses were becoming frequent out from Nino's mouth and touches were becoming cold. And just now when he could finally spend time with Nino again, the man was pushing him away once again.
“Are we okay?” Ohno finally voiced out when Nino sat on the floor in front of the couch instead of sitting beside him. He could have let it slip by because he already know how Nino would put a hundred percent of his concentration on his game while Ohno just sat behind him, watching and cheering. It was okay because he could feel Nino's presence as whole, not just a body in front of him. But today was different and even if it was hard to admit it, he was in verge of giving up too.
Noises from the game filled the room yet not a single word from the electronics student. Ohno understood when he wasn't needed, when he wasn't wanted and no matter how this would hurt him, he needed to leave. He would give Nino his own time. Maybe he needed his own time too to think about what was happening because the more this kept on, the more he was losing Nino once again.
"I'll be leaving then." Ohno mumbled, choosing to not make this big than it already was. He was passing by Nino, ready to accept the harsh treatment of not hearing a single word from the latter but a hand grab wrist and then suddenly, sound of game over could be heard.
He looked at his wrist, to the pale skin that held it and to the owner who was standing down, head bow load and bangs covering his face. When Ohno squinted, he could see that Nino had his eyes close, a calming breathing that was scary for some reason. It wasn’t in the aspect like the one would feel when watching horror movies but it was in the aspect where you would be afraid of what would be the words that would come out in those lips that was letting out puffs of air now.
He had observed how Nino finally opened his eyes and then looking up, opening his mouth to say something until…
Dling! Dlong! Dling! Dlong!
Both heads shot up towards the door. One was cautious while the other was somehow anxious. Nino instantly let go of Ohno’s hand and went straight towards the door in a second, leaving Ohno standing there, stunned with how fast Nino moved. The only thing that had him coming back to senses was a familiar voice and then sniffs and crying. Getting worried, he went to the hallway towards the door and saw Aiba crying with Nino who had gritted teeth by the doorway. Aiba was the first one to notice him.
“Ah, it’s Ohno-san.” Aiba gasped in recognition, “I see… I may have interrupted something. I’m sorry, I’ll just come ba-“
“No, he was leaving already.” Nino cut in that had Aiba rendered speechless and confuse.
“But I-“
Aiba didn’t continue when Nino shook his head and Ohno understood the two of them were putting Aiba in an awkward position.
“I’ll be going then.” Ohno plainly said. He walked towards the door, glancing at Nino when he was within reach but the younger male didn’t meet his eyes. He offered Aiba a small smile and once he was out in the doorstep, he glanced back. The last thing he saw before the door completely closed was Nino’s cold but sad eyes and a murmur of, “Goodbye.”
Ohno looked at the dark sky once he stepped out of Nino’s apartment building, letting go of the breath he didn’t know he had been holding. One question was still left unanswered.
“Are we okay, Kazu?”
-------------------------------------------
Aiba and Nino were quiet for quite some time. It had been an hour and so since Aiba arrived and Ohno left. Aiba had his head in Nino’s lap while the latter was watching whatever it was on air in the television. When Aiba opened his eyes, he could see the glassiness of Nino’s eyes, tears that wanted to pour but the owner didn’t want to. Aiba kept silent, thoughts were travelling again back to a certain cram school teacher.
( Aiba was positive everything would be okay now. He was sure from now on, everything would change. But he wasn’t prepared how drastic the change was and to where it was leading. Aiba wasn’t asking much knowing he had Sho’s love and devotion. But as day by day passed, that assurance was sipping out again and it left Aiba lost.
He had been observing the teacher from some time now after their night together, how their night outs together were becoming less and less, how Sho would avoid Aiba’s eyes whenever they had lessons in cram school, how Sho would avoid him all in all. Aiba was actually used to it because he knew Sho wasn’t used to the idea yet. But then, that night after their disastrous dinner, he thought everything would change for the better, or so he thought it was.
He tried to cornered him last night cram school since Nino was absent and he thought he could use it as a excuse to talk to Sho about it, like asking for additional lessons for Nino so he could keep up since his friend did missed quite a few lessons lately. Of course, he was acting that everything was alright because he was giving Sho his time first, although he had been giving that all along but then he could wait right? Because he had been holding to a new hope, to Sho’s words, he would wait. Call him an idiot or foolish but he was in love that was all that really mattered.
“Sho-chan!” he called when he managed to chance Sho who was waiting in front the building were the sessions were held.
It didn’t really mattered how Sho looked so startled when he looked back and saw him. What really registered in Aiba was how Sho’s eyes couldn’t meet his.
“Aiba-san, how can I help you?” Sho asked a moment later.
Aiba flinched at how formal Sho was acting with him, especially now. “S-Sho?” Aiba stuttered. Something wasn’t right.
“Sho-kun!” Aiba’s eyes darted sideways and so did Sho, and once again Aiba’s worries suddenly walked towards him.
“There you are. Are you ready?”
Aiba’s eyes darted back and forth between Sho and the woman who just approached them, the same woman who slapped to him the reality once again with her ever-classy persona, especially when the same woman got close to Sho and then peck him in his cheek and Aiba felt his chest aching.
“Are? You’re the one with Sho-kun in the restaurant before right?” Maki asked in recognition. Aiba wasn’t able to answer as soon as possible, chancing a glance towards Sho who had his eyes casted to the floor like it was the most interesting thing in the world.
Maki titled her head in confusion but Aiba tried his best to reassure her despite feeling so hurt right that moment, so broken and so lost. Was it all a lie then?
“Ah, yes. It’s nice seeing you again Horikita-san.” Aiba said with a smile he forced out of his hurting self. He gave a bow and Maki did the same to him.
“Yes, it’s nice seeing you again, Aiba-san.” Maki said and then turned to Sho, “So, shall we go? It’s getting late and you know how your father doesn’t like being late.” Maki said, cheerful and unaware of the atmosphere looming between the two gentlemen in her presence.
“Ah, yes. Let’s go.” Sho agreed weakly. It took him a lot of willpower to face Aiba with a straight face, “We must be going.”
Aiba nodded silently because he didn’t have words to say. Were there really words to say at times like this? At times when the one you love suddenly acted that nothing was between you?
“Nice meeting you again, Aiba-san.” Maki said and turned around. Aiba gave a slight bow, trying to hide how his eyes were brimming with tears already. When he looked up, Sho was looking at him, sad and full of thought and Aiba thought maybe he would get explanation from Sho or something. Anything was good than nothing right?
And yet, all he got was before leaving with Maki, “Goodbye Aiba-san.”
Aiba stood there, watching how Maki linked her arms around Sho and walked together towards the car. He saw how Isogai was looking at him apologetic when he was closing the door for his master and his guest after they got in the car. He just watched as the car drove away and his tears finally fell. )
“I guess in the end, we’re from the two different worlds huh?” Aiba murmured yet Nino completely heard it. Nino was silent as his thoughts traveled back to the day when Nino thought everything was gonna be okay.
( Nino just came back from staying over Ohno’s place. He had been neglecting his thesis a bit and he was sure his games may be holding a grudge on him already since he hadn’t played much unlike before. Well, Ohno was a nice distraction from games honestly and he wasn’t really and completely complaining. He was in front his door already, his keys in his hand and was going to stick in it when he stilled his hand.
Years being in the industry of theft, if there is an industry like that, had sharpened his other senses already. It allowed him to detect movements even when he couldn’t see a thing. Looking on a brighter side, it may be Aiba but Aiba wasn’t like him even if the taller guy already knew how to pick-lock. And if there was someone else robbing his house, he would laugh at the irony of everything.
He just shrugged it off. If there really was an intruder in his house, he would just give that intruder a piece of his mind, and maybe a broken nose or bone in some aspect if the intruder made an unwanted move. He was honestly tired, and still sore so he really wanted to go to best as early a possible and just do his thesis after he woke up.
And so like a normal person he was, he opened his door and went inside, opting not to open the light. Either the thief would be hiding by now, so he would just move after the thief made his own move. But how wrong he was when he went further inside his apartment and towards the living room where a man was sitting comfortably, crossed-legs and sipping orange juice that probably came from his fridge. The lamp beside the couch was open and illuminated the man’s distinct features when he finally looked up and met Nino’s eyes.
“Jun-kun?” Nino breathed, quite confused at the sudden visit he had from his friend but it quickly turned to a smirk as he opened his eyes, “And to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?” he asked and adding at the end, “Emperor?”
Jun smiled, quite amused at Nino’s another nickname for him. Jun took his sweet time in finishing off his drink, twirling his glass before swallowing the remains and putting it in the coffee table. Nino was getting bored already and really, he wanted to get to bed as soon as possible. He opted in leaning his back against the nearest wall. He sighed, “J, if you need anything, could you please hurry up? I don’t have time for this. I really just want to rest.” It wasn’t like him when Nino felt fidgety all of sudden in front of Jun. Mind games were the usual game between the two if they wanted amusement but for some reason, Jun’s aura was telling him another and it was something serious.
Jun’s smile didn’t flatter either even when he said, “But you do have time for Ohno-kun huh?”
Nino’s eyes widened and then looked at Jun who stood up with indifference in his aura, like he didn’t say anything at all, nothing alarm and everything was normal between all of them. Nino couldn’t meet Jun’s eyes but he felt how Jun’s were looking at him, observing him before he heard footsteps approaching, stopping in front of him and when he looked up, Jun wasn’t looking to him but looking ahead.
“I just hope you don’t forget that a cop isn’t welcome in the world of a thief.” Jun said making Nino more agitated.
“What are you planning?” Nino asked with gritted teeth, his hands were ball of fist.
Jun looked towards him, dead serious and cold, a Matsumoto Jun that was his boss and to whom he was indebted with and then suddenly he smiled and it sent shivers in Nino’s whole body.
“I’m not going to do anything.” Jun assured Nino but the latter felt far from it and he confirmed it when Jun continued, “But, shouldn’t you be doing something now?”
Nino then was taken back and then he remembered the files he had in his drawer, blueprints and details about his next target, the one that he really had been neglecting so far. When he glanced back towards Jun, he nodded in acknowledgement.
Jun gave Nino a pat in his shoulder before leaving and saying, “See you.”
When the door closed and the footsteps started to faced, Nino slid down against the wall and tears were already pouring.
Reminders of why it was impossible for him and Ohno to be came to his minds, of differences, sins and crimes.
Nino would always be thankful for Ohno because the latter had always been nothing but good to him, maybe even too good because even in simple things, the older male manage to make him feel different and alive. He had seen it, how Ohno treated him like he was the most precious thing in the world and the painting of him he found in Ohno’s art room proved how much Ohno treasured him, loved him like no one did ever before that it moved him to tears and asking his self always, “Do I deserved him?”
Ohno had given him so much hope and reason that everything was just okay yet all he could repay now was hurt and pain.
But then maybe they were just two too different people and Jun was right. He was a thief and Ohno was a cop and each person wasn’t welcome in both worlds. )
“Two too different worlds…” Nino clarified as a lone tear manage to escape, trailing his cheeks.
“I guess we should forget about being able to live in their worlds huh?” Aiba mumbled, closing his eyes.
It took seconds before Nino could get what Aiba had said. Slowly, he looked down toward his lap where Aiba’s head was still lying, his hand slowly touched Aiba’s head and softly caressed it. He could see how Aiba was trying to stop his own tears but failed and so he waited until Aiba’s breathe evened and slumber took him.
“No, not you Aiba-chan. You deserved better than that.” Nino whispered a promise.

Chapter 9-------------------------------------------
AUTHOR’S NOTES:
So, did anyone guess that it was Jun after all? That Jun was the one who Toma called at the last part of chapter 3 when he found Ohno checking at Nino’s file? Nurufufufu, I like to call Jun’s character a big character in the background because as the story moves on, you’ll see just how much. A lot of explanations and backgrounds are coming in the next chapter, how Jun is involved with Aiba and Nino’s heists, why Sho suddenly is going out with Maki and so on.
Jun already gave a warning but don’t worry, he won’t hurt anyone (physically that is). Ohno and Aiba are confused with their partners. Sho is hiding something and Nino is definitely unto something. There are 6 to 7 chapters till this is finished. Hope you’ll stay with this story till the end.
If you are confused about something, don’t hesitate to ask me ‘kay? Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
P.S. I keep on feeling that I think I overdid this, too much angst and drama. Sorry! Do tell me I got overboard and I’ll try to tone it down (hopefully).
