i wonder if, in the days before plastic, people would put bits of fruit in the little cubbies of these things. i further wonder if, three weeks later, the gift was not so much "one pristine clementine" as "300 gnats and maggots"

Ah! There we have the fine tradition of candied or sugared fruit to avoid those unpleasant little intruders especially in tropical climates.

how does putting sugar on fruit make it less appealing to bugs?

The bugs still like it but they get so overloaded with the extra sugar that they need naps and it slows them down. :)

I also just thought about marzipan which I always like the look of but not the taste. I know that was a special holiday treat.

ah. you know they make marzipan of different nuts now, yeah? have you tried walnuttipan? hazelpan?

Yummy hazelnut. I'm currently addicted to cashew butter which is oh so much better than peanut butter.
