Desperate Times
I've read the instant message exchange between former Rep. Mark Foley and the page. It's creepy and cringe-inducing if you choose to read it. It definitely goes beyond White House spokesman Tony Snow's initial characterization "simply naughty e-mails".
Conservative pundit Matt Drudge is defending Foley by accusing the pages of "egging the Congressman on" and "playing Foley for everything he's worth". And the House Majority Leader, John Boehner, tries to distance himself from the situation by laying it on the doorstep of his cohort, Speaker of The House, Dennis Hastert, "It's in his corner, it's his responsibility."
I'm still waiting for the Republican's October Surprise since it's only the third day of the month but I think this scandal has the potential to keep rolling on until November 7th. But will it actually impact how people vote on Election Day?
Just imagine for a moment the uproar from the Republicans if the Congressman involved had been a Democrat. I wonder what Drudge and Snow would have had to say if that was the case.
I think a little historical perspective is in order, though. I came across this today while reading articles about Pagegate. A list of scandalous US politicians starting with traitors during the Revolutionary War through Bill Janklow's 2004 manslaughter conviction.
