I keep getting this ad on YouTube titled "What does it mean to be Singaporean?" I let it play because I know it's funding my staple channels, but it baffles me how we accept national identity being as simple as a feeling and commitment of belonging to a group, yet when it comes to LGBT identities, it can't just be that. It has to be about sins and morals and bodies and biology and PROOF.
Seriously, it's simple. How can someone explain why they're attracted to a certain gender or none at all? How can someone explain why they're the gender that they are? It's just a damn feeling, a knowing that that's YOU, the same as knowing you like the opposite (problematic but let's not go there) gender or that you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth. Those things go unquestioned as the unsaid normal but if we could just see gender identities and sexualities as feelings, things you just KNOW, not any different from the cishet experience, maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't be arguing and demanding scientific proof and depriving people of the human rights they deserve, and maybe we could just let people be the goddamn people they know themselves to be.
