Torchwood 1x03 -- Ghost Machine (and new trailer)

+ Gareth Thomas! Yikes, I hardly recognised you. Either the makeup dept did a very good job, or well... Yes. People get old, but I still think you're going to be all curly-haired rebel. Although ironically enough (was it actually irony? Hm.), you got killed off by someone who should've been your closest ally. Poor old Blake guy.
+ Oh, Owen. I want to like you, I really do. I think I was the only person who didn't find you creepy in Bleak House. And I've really got to stop mentally calling you Guppy. But it just fits so well. Anyway, yay - you had a strong emotional response to an appropriately disturbing situation. Obviously the actions of the first ep (Not Quite Date Rape Innna Can!) have had some resonance, and that staff didn't just play it all for laughs. Good. But you're still a bit of a git. Paraphrasing - 'I didn't kill him and that's what's important' whilst poor Gwen is sitting there, traumatised after KILLING HIM. You've got to work on your sensitivity there, laddie. But, you do have promise. And I also wanted to hug you just a little after the apparition-thingie. Please to not be turning into a woobie, though, OK?
+ Jack. Still pretty.
+ What, you were expecting something insightful? OK, Jack - you sure as hell are getting mood-swingy. 'GWEN! With me!'. He's pissy at Owen/the whole situation and so what's the first thing he does? Grabs the pretty new girl and shoots guns, whilst cleverly copping a feel. Insert shoddy Freudian analysis here.
Also? 'I don't sleep.' Does he mean that literally? No only is Jack immortal, he also doesn't require sleep? Even the Highlander immies need to catch forty winks. What does this mean for his physiology? Humans need sleep. We go a little nuts, then die if we don't get it. Is Jack's body so advanced/fucked-up by Rose that he doesn't even require such a basic human necessity. Does it mean he could survive in a vacuum? I'd also be surprised if he didn't go nuts through sheer boredom. Of course, he could be exaggerating.
+ Gwen. You were destined to be the, er, destined, one. Determinism's a bitch, innit? Watching the first flashback with the kid from the '40's, I (and I expect a lot of Who fen) had an Empty Child flashback, and I immediately considered the fact that he was some sort of alien. Whoops.
So, Gwen is put through the wringer - accidentally kills a man, and Jack's wise words of comfort are 'Look. The sun's rising. It's a new day! Cheer up, Emo Kid!' Can someone please give all of the members of Torchwood some basic training in how NOT to cheer people up?
+ Tosh. Well, you got to be Tech Girl again. Nothing much to report, except for the little 'Go Gwen!' squee she gave earlier in the up, which was decidedly cute.
+ Ianto. Sorry, I must've blinked and missed you. Fortunately it looks like you'll be getting plenty of material in next week's ep.
+ Next week's trailer? Ianto has a Cyberman girlfriend/friend who he's been keeping secret? This is where the angst comes in then. I thought TW was supposed to be much more independent from Doctor Who than this.
+ Oh, and did anyone else love the background music in the final scene? It sounded lovely - very emotive, not sappy, and mildly uplifting. Totally saved the scene for me.
