Title: Janto Epic
Author: silvercat63
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: R/Mature
Summary: We know how Jack and Ianto met, but we've never seen the journey they took to get from the events of "Fragemnts" to "Everything Changes and getting beyond "Cyber Woman." This is supposed to look at what they did.
Disclaimer: The characters, events, and idea of Torchwood are not mine. They belong to the BBC and Mr. Russel T. Davies. No money was made from this; it's just for fun.
Author's Note: I started this before they aired season three, so there are mistakes. Also, I never finished writing this, but I decided to post what I had anyway.

Ianto was up bright and early. He was hardly bright eyed and bushy tailed but he was on schedule. His head still hurt a bit from the scratch the Weevil had given him the night before and he took a few more aspirin while he brewed a pot of coffee. He savored the strong brew as he made his way to the Plass. He hoped that Jack liked his coffee strong.

Heart drumming in anticipation Ianto took up his place outside the tourist office that was the secret entrance to Torchwood Three. He only had to wait a moment before Captain Jack Harkness strode out the door. Ianto had spent weeks watching the man and knew that he usually emerged at this time of morning to go and get something for breakfast.

“Morning! Coffee?” Ianto held out the steaming mug. He was pleased to see his hand was rock steady and didn't betray how nervous he was.

Jack eyed the coffee suspiciously before accepting it and taking a cautious sip. “Wow.”

Again, Jack's reaction disappointed Ianto, but he forged ahead. “I wanna work for you.”

“Sorry, no vacancies.” Was the cold reply.

“Look, lemme tell you about myself.” Ianto tried to keep the desperation out of his voice, he knew Jack had already read all his records, but he had to keep up the charade.

Jack walked away, dismissing him, but Ianto followed, tagging along like a puppy. “Ianto Jones, born August 19, 1983. Able student, but not exceptional. One minor conviction for shoplifting in your teens. Number of temporary jobs, mainly a drifter, until two years ago you joined the Torchwood Institute in London. Junior Researcher. Girlfriend, Lisa Hallet.”

The last fact startled him, he didn't think that would have turned up in his files. Trying to hide his surprise he said, “Deceased.”

“Sorry.”

“Look, you checked me out.” Ianto was really desperate now. He reached out, putting a hand on Jack's chest to stop him.

“You knew what a Weevil was. Thought I was going to have to come - deal with you.” Ianto didn't like the sound of that.

“But instead you can see I have the right qualifications for the job.”

“There is no job.” Jack's voice was rising, he was getting annoyed. “I want nothing to do with Torchwood London. I severed all links.”

Jack shoved past Ianto and kept walking.

“And when it burnt two members of your team scavenged the ruins!” Ianto put his hand on Jack's chest again.

“Don't want the equipment getting into the wrong hands.” Jack emphasized his point by removing Ianto's hand from his chest.

“And you're the right hands, are you?” Ianto was really desperate now. “Trial period, three months!”

“No.”

“Three weeks!” No response. “Three days! Let me prove myself to you - I'll work for nothing!”

“No!” Jack shoved past him again, determined to be on his way. Ianto caught up with him and seized his shoulder roughly, pushing Jack to a stop.

Ianto changed tactics. “I saw what they did at Canary Wharf! What am I supposed to do with those memories?”

“You're not my responsibility!” Jack was angry now and he shoved past the younger man. “And we're not hiring.”

Ianto sensed he had pushed too hard and let Jack go. He called to the retreating back, “Same time tomorrow then?”

“There is no job for you here. And there never will be!” Jack didn't look back, he just kept walking.

Ianto stood for a moment, and then set the hook a little deeper. “I really like that coat!”

Ianto didn't see Jack raise an eyebrow was he walked away. All he saw was Jack walking away, totally ignoring him. It's okay, it's okay, Ianto assured himself. This is only the second day, you have plenty of time. You just have to keep trying. He felt silly standing there with a half drunk cup of coffee so he tossed the still steaming liquid into Cardiff Bay. And that was one of my favorite brews, he thought. Good coffee is wasted on Americans.

Knowing there was nothing more he could do for the day Ianto went home. Tomorrow was another day and Jack would have to come out sometime. Ianto was patient, he had to be. He had to get into Torchwood again. He had to save Lisa. He'd promised her, and he never broke his word.
