Brainspace and energy have been sparse recently, and a lot but not really much at all has happened. Some minor boots to the head recently have fixed some gears that were stuck, so deeper thoughts from this front soon. Hopefully!
Between people visiting and visiting people has mostly been planning for things and trying to keep the house clean. (Seriously, how do you people do it??) Neighbors being neighborly. A goat festival. A child learning how to deal with "No." Work. Some sleep.
There was a wedding! We played the starring roles. From what I can tell, it was a good time -- I wish I could remember most of it. We tried to do a lot of planning ourselves and made the mistake of forgetting about having a receiving line, so I was running around trying to greet people and make sure things were running smoothly most of the time. We were really trying to keep it small, so a lot of folks we wanted there didn't get invited. A minor regret now, since my mom went crazy with her invitations and ended up inviting everyone she knew. Only three of Jim's family made it, so friends' presences helped him a lot. Little details keep nagging at me -- there were several people who obviously showed up but I didn't even get to thank for coming; I have no idea if they ended up serving root beer; I have no idea if the iced tea was any good; I'm still feeling slightly guilty about failing at printing a program, which had all the credits listed so the appropriate people could be praised. I think it went mostly smoothly, though. The pictures make it look good!
One suggestion to anyone embarking on what will end up a semi-traditional life course: Do things the way your grandparents tell you to do them and get married, then buy a house, then have kids. Morality can go to hell -- it's just a much more practical
way of dealing with things!
Endless thanks again to everyone who herded people and ran things and bore booze and hugged me and dealt with my family. We absolutely could not have done it without you! You also helped anchor my head a little, providing me with some refreshing "normality" in what would have been a pretty awkward social situation. I needed you guys there. And we're hoping we were successful at our strategy of inviting folks who would still love us even after suffering through scores of dotty old people and me being crazy.
The garden is absolutely neglected right now. We're only this weekend getting to staking the tomatoes. Fortunately none are ripe yet with this cold summer. The squashes are loving the weather, though. I think the corn is ready to harvest, and the chard is flourishing! Jim managed to trellis the grapes and work on the kiwi trellis last week, so we're starting to look semi-serious about food production. A better garden post later.
Found a stretch of road between two fields a few miles from the highway and far enough from the city that I can see stars and hear only a little industry. If i park on the side of the road I can sit on my car door and watch the moon and hear owls and mice and not get devoured by mosquitoes. Nights when I leave work early and have no other obligations will be capped here.
A very satisfying dream last night about leading a successful rebellion against a 1984/Demolition Man meld of distopian authoritarianism. I'd visited the world before but never made a difference until then. Still working through this one.
Not much progress elsewhere. The cold weather had made me lethargic, and the mosquitoes keep me inside! Excuses, excuses. Other sticky things are buried and don't wish to surface at the moment. Currents are flowing again though, and there will be motion soon! Yay motion!
