There's something surprisingly satisfying about literally cutting away at the landscape to create a food garden. We initially tried whacking at the grass with a weed removal instrument since we couldn't find a scythe and knew this was beyond the abilities of the reel mower. Very frustrating and labor intensive, and especially aggravating on an 85-degree afternoon. We found some grass shears and are slowly snipping the grass to the roots, meanwhile inspecting the soil, contemplating vole-removal methods, and enjoying discovery of the ground-level world of pill bugs, worms, slugs and sleepy caterpillars. I'm definitely using this method again for any future similarly-sized project or smaller.
We're almost finished the porch; just a bit of trim paint, a second coat on the posts, and hanging things that jingle and sparkle in the wind. We'll paint the cement in the spring, and touch up the ceiling if the recurring blotchiness still bothers us.
Jim harvested seven beech nuts from the back yard. We'll roast them this weekend after cleaning up the woods a bit.
Connor is almost mobile. We're scared.
