Fridays, Arr me Hearties!
It's incredibly Friday today, if by that you mean my coworker flailing his arms and yelling "I have a porn mustache! I have come to clean zee pool!" He is quite correct, he really does have one.
The discussion of the
Papua New Guinea women who have been killing their sons to prevent violent tribal war that is destroying their existance has done the rounds, with varying opinions being given. Including those by some of the workers who deal with the villages saying that in their opinion most of the discussion was metaphorical, along the lines of 'By giving birth, we kill them, because they will only grow to die'.
That aside, I have been utterly bewildered by some of the commentary along the lines of 'This is why women should never run the world'. Really? Because it doesn't seem to me as though these women are in charge of anything here at all. If they could order the war to stop, they would, so this seems to me a horrific side effect of the devastating disease of the utterly powerless more than anything else. They are starving and dying because of the war as it is. Also the people who have been predicting doom since with no males the tribes will die out, as if having only ten or so males around would do nothing to sire children.
The only thing I could think of really if I was in their position would be to insist to my mate that any sons I gave birth to he must feed and care for. If you want sons, you need to raise them. Which might keep my mate alive, because he would be stuck doing things like helping collect food and not stabbing other people.
Steampunk
Folk out there, I'd love to give you more information, but someone new finds Datamancer's keyboard about five times a second and as a result my news sifter software keeps saying HAY DATAMANCER IS KOOL and we knew that months ago. Ah well!
However, this fully functional rather
steampunk sewing machine is fun.
