For some reason, the story arc of River and the Silence in season 6 makes some more sense after listening to
the Kingmaker, in certain aspects -- in the sense of the whole "Time Can Be Rewritten" vs 'Fixed Points in Time' being similar to the discussion on how the story keeps changing, but the ending stays the same.
So the Silence were trying to change how the story played out, in hopes of actually changing how the story will end and instead might just be making a self fulling prophecy.
(which... is probably obvious, but I thought that parallel was funny. Especially with sending notes though time, the identity switches, and the Doctor being late again.)
Edit; also, based on the first two serials of Old Who, I fully believe that the First Doctor had originally wanted to be part of a survey team, but was denied due to random politics. He didn't start out wanting to see the universe for adventure-sake, he wanted to examine it and if it was exciting that was an added plus (doesn't cope well with boredom, even then).
