Prompt: Henri in a happier moment (smoothiesims)
Characters: Henrietta, Carolina
Rating: G
Summary: Henri gets ready for her first dance.
Notes: This can be considered canon. Writing this really made me miss Henri, and I now want to have her in another story where I can give her a happier ending.
Word Count: 342

Henrietta Bradford studied her reflection in the mirror with a critical eye. It might only be a small dance at the local grange, but it was the first dance she was attending as a young lady, and she wanted to make a good impression. Her new dress was a pretty wine color, and suited her complexion perfectly, and the new way of styling her hair was just perfect. Still, something was missing, and she wasn’t sure what.

There was a soft knock on the door, and when Henri called out her permission to enter Carolina came through the door.

“You look lovely, dear,” she said.

“Thank you, Mama. I can’t help but think I’m missing something.”

Carolina pulled Henri gently away from the mirror into the center of the room. She walked around her daughter, examining her.

“You’re right, Henrietta. I think this is what you need,” she said as she placed a flat box in her daughter’s hands.

Henri looked up at her mother with a question on her lips, but she quickly opened the box instead. Inside was a lovely garnet necklace and earring set that would complement her dress perfectly. Henri gasped.

“Thank you, Mama. Where…”

“They were my mother’s. I gave Anne and Diana sets that belonged to her as well, and I’ve laid one aside for Philomena as well, but I knew these would suit you perfectly. Put them on and let me see.”

Henri returned to the mirror and fastened the dangly earrings, and then Carolina clasped the necklace for her.

“I was right; they suit you perfectly.”

Henri gently touched the large stone that sat at the hollow of her throat. “I look so grown up.”

“My dear child,” Carolina said, putting her hands on her daughter’s shoulders,” you are grown up. You’ll be the belle of the dance tonight, and all the boys will be competing for your dances.”

Henri smiled in the shy way that made so many boys in her class go weak in the knees. “That would be wonderful, wouldn’t it?”
