James scraped the last of the mashed potatoes and gravy off his plate with his fork. The food at his dormitory wasn’t bad, per say, but it certainly didn’t hold a candle to his mother’s cooking.
“Manners, James,” Marsha chided gently. “You can have seconds.”
James grinned at her. “Mama, you must have failed to notice that I left seconds behind a while ago and moved on to thirds.”
“Don’t they feed you at school?”
“Sure. But it’s not your cooking.”
Marsha beamed at her eldest. “Well, with all those helpings, I hope you saved room for dessert. I made your favorite - Devil’s food cake.”
“Oh, I suppose I can manage to make room for a slice or two.”
Marsha cleared the plates and went into the kitchen to get the aforementioned cake.
“So,” Jefferson asked, “How are you finding college?”
“I like it. It would be nice if I had a few more classes with Sterling or Taddy, but other than that it’s all copacetic.”
Jefferson looked at James with a puzzled expression on his face. “Come again?”
“Copacetic? Haven’t you had that before? I would have thought that one of these two,” he gestured towards his younger sister and brother, “would have used it by now.”
“It’s a new word, Papa,” interjected Cyrus.
“It means ‘very satisfactory,’” chimed in Viola.
“Why not just say that, then? I don’t see why they invented a new word to express something that we already have a perfectly good one for.”
James shrugged. “Language evolves, Papa. We don’t talk the same way Grandpa John did, and I don’t expect that my great-grandchildren will talk the way I do.”
“I suppose you’re right,” Jefferson admitted. “Though there are times when I think you younger set comes up with these things just to confound us old people.”
“Uh oh,” James said in a stage whisper as he winked at his siblings. “He’s on to us.”
Everyone laughed as Marsha came into the room with the decadent chocolate cake. “What’s so funny?”
“James is, with his fancy new college words,” Jefferson replied.
