“Careful, Nettie! You’re going to burn me with that curling iron!”
“If you’d stop squirming for five seconds, Peggy, you wouldn’t have to worry about it,” Nettie retorted.
“I can’t help it. I’m nervous. It’s my first high school dance, and it took forever to convince Dad I was old enough to go. And then to agree to the dress that Mom and I picked out. And to let Aunt Shirley drive me.”
“I’m well aware of the saga involved,” Nettie said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“I hope you appreciate all that I’m doing in paving the way for you, sister dear,” Peggy said with just as much sarcasm. “By the time you’re in high school, Dad will have gotten used to all this.”
“I sure hope so. He can’t always have been this much of a stick in the mud, or Mom wouldn’t have married him,” Nettie mused.
“It’s because we’re girls and he knows what boys think like,” Peggy said wisely. “Mom told me.”
“There,” Nettie said, as she finished up with her sister’s hair. “Do you dare try some lipstick?”
Peggy looked wistful for a moment, and then gently shook her head, not wanting to muss Nettie’s hard work. “As much as I want to, Dad would raise holy hell if I tried wearing make-up too.”
Nettie smiled in a conspiring way. “Here, put it in your purse and put it on at the dance. Just remember to wipe it off before Dad picks you up.”
Peggy threw her arms around Nettie. “You’re the best!”
Alice’s voice called up the stairs. “Aunt Shirley’s here, Peggy!”
“On my way down, Mom!”
