Douglas eyed his mother as she stood sentry over the refreshment table with his Aunt Alice.
“One little prank with some vodka, and I’m practically on house arrest for the rest of high school,” he muttered.
“It’s your own fault, you know,” Franklin said to his brother.
“No one asked you, Frankie,” Douglas spat. “Now go suck up to Mom some more. It’s been at least ten minutes since the last time you did.”
Franklin went off in a huff, and Douglas continued to lean against a wall of the gymnasium in the dark.
Peggy bounded over, her face flushed. “You know, Doug, this is a sock hop. You’re supposed to dance.”
“Maybe I don’t feel like dancing.”
“Then why come to a school dance in the first place?”
“Because Mom insisted that she wanted me somewhere where she could watch me.”
Peggy shook her head. “You going to sulk in the corner all night?”
“Maybe.”
“Wrong answer. You’re dancing with me now.”
“You really want to be seen dancing with your cousin?”
“We’re not that close of cousins, Doug. Besides, I want to make someone jealous, and what better way to do that than to dance with the hippest boy in school?”
“Twist my arm. Okay, next dance is mine.”
Peggy smiled wide. “I hope you know how to jitterbug,” she said as she grabbed Douglas’ hand and pulled him into the crowd of dancers.
