“Move over!” Peggy demanded of her younger sister. “It’s going to start soon!”
“Why do I have to move over?” Nettie asked. “I was here first!”
Nick pinched the bridge of his nose. “Girls, if you two don’t knock it off, I’m going to turn the television off.”
“You can’t do that, Dad,” they trilled in unison. You promised we could watch!”
“Not if you don’t stop bickering.”
Instantaneously, the two teenage girls clamped their mouths shut, but their posture on the sofa and the way they had their arms crossed on their chests told Nick that neither of them were happy with him at them moment.
“Has the show started yet?” asked Alice as she hurried into the room with a large bowl of popcorn.
“Not you, too,” Nick groaned as Alice wedged herself between her daughters.
“Nick, don’t be a fuddy-duddy.”
“It’s not enough that I have to listen to this…noise on their record player all day long. Now it needs to invade my evening television as well?”
“Shh!” hushed Peggy. “It’s started.”
Nick made a face as the three women in the room directed their attention to the television set and the opening of the Ed Simivan Show. He opened the newspaper and proceeded to loudly ruffle the pages as he flipped through them. Alice scowled, and got up to raise the volume on the television. Nick flipped the paper down as if he were going to protest, but kept his mouth shut when he saw the glare his wife was giving him.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” said the man in the television, “the Beatles!”
Peggy, Nettie, and possibly Alice began squealing as loud as the girls on the television were, and Nick got up and left the room, muttering something about “that noise” under his breath. The three redheads didn’t even notice that he was gone, as their attention was fully devoted to the band on the screen.
“Mom, are you humming along?” Peggy asked, aghast.
Alice colored slightly. “What? It’s catchy.”
The three of them dissolved into giggles as they began to sing along with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
