midweek moments

Dec 19, 2012 09:18

Things are better for me personally than they were this time last week, although the end of last week and the start of this one has been filled with far too much grief for others.

To be honest, I'm ready for 2012 to be over. The wild highs of success that have occurred have been counterbalanced by a lot of shattering, traumatic lows this year.

Anyway. Onward and upward. Today I've blocked out a good deal of writing time - I have 1 manuscript to revise, one to draft, and a few other things to finish, including Yuletide tonight. I'm hopeful that the snow that's falling outside will contribute to a state of quiet and peace conducive to putting words on the page.

While I'm away doing that, here are a few links from my reading file that I wanted to share with you all.
  • Learning to fail in order to succeed: risk-taking and women in science. Interesting opinion piece from the Guardian that talks about how being encouraged to try and fail is one of the cornerstones to building success, and how that's more commonly done for boys than girls. Something to think about.

  • Personal DNA testing, reasonably priced. Speaking of science, check this out! I have to admit, I'm curious. Some pros and cons are mentioned in the comments.

  • 2012's best articles: 25 pieces for women readers. This is the Huffington Post's list. Caveat: I've not read them all, I've just skimmed the headlines and read a few select ones. I think there's a good deal of variability and some bias in that it's skewed by the selector's preferences, but there are some interesting things in there, so I figured it'd be worth linking for others to take a look at, too.

Off to work on my own writing, now. Feel free to drop links in comments, if there's something you think I should check out or that others might be interested in!
