Because it appears to be That Kind of Day for a number of people around the Internet, I thought I'd share some links from my morning reading that have one great thing in common: each and every one of them made me smile.
- Gaslamp Games - promoting safe spaces for women gamers. Quoting the post's author: "I’m about to tell you a story about videogames, kitchens, and internet forums that has a happy ending. Stop laughing, I’m serious." She's right, and I am absolutely thrilled to see such a contrast to the all-too-familiar stories about women's experiences in gaming online forums. I'll be checking out Gaslamp Games in the very near future. Hat tip to Geek Feminism.
- Moms at tech start-ups say they CAN have it all. I found this report from a focus group discussion and interviews among 14 tech industry women, including those in leadership positions, to be very heartening. Again, the hat tip goes to Geek Feminism.
- Thoroughly Good Books by POC. This awareness-raising post by Jim Hines and the associated Twitter campaign is one of the best responses to the Foyt mess I've seen yet. (I'm still in mourning for Weird Tales due to the utter and absolute mess that its new leadership appears to be making of what used to be an incredible magazine with a great history, but things like this definitely help.)
- The Avengers Gag Reel. I am still laughing about this! Thanks to saphyria for originally linking me to the reel itself, and I strongly suggest everyone run check it out before this copy gets taken down, too.
