each challenge is a new adventure

Feb 18, 2012 10:19

As I mentioned on Twitter late yesterday evening, my yesterday included both the purchase of a new piano (YAY) and the discovery that my faithful old laptop may have quietly died (BOO). Of course, I found out about the latter after having already committed to the former. Argh. Oh well. I have spent the better part of a year building up a budget and emergency fund for things like this, and had just augmented it with my tax refund less than a week ago, thank heaven, so we'll see how it all shakes out.

The piano is a Kawai digital, btw, CN23. The reason I pounced on it now was due to a store liquidation sale -- there's been a merger, and they're trying to clear inventory so they have room, which means the price was incomparable. I do prefer acoustic pianos, but I cannot afford the quality I would want for another several years, and this one does have a lovely sound in the meantime.

It's being delivered this morning, after which I will head off to the shop and see what the Mac techs say. My own diagnostics from the boot cycle interrupt point and various tests and tricks tried indicate I may be looking at a failed logic board. Ouch. I guess we'll see. I have had this computer for at least five years now with basically no real trouble, so it's fair.

Also, I have current backups of everything as of Thursday, including my dissertation draft, so I am confident that the data is recoverable. Otherwise I would be a lot more upset right now. As it is, I am more resigned than anything else.

I am also going to discover soon just how difficult it may be to edit said draft on Logos the iPad, but oh well. Worst case, I will hand write everything and then type it up at work before the day officially begins.

Other things -- Allpocalypse people, I will do my best, and will email with a status update as soon as I have one.

Speaking of the Allpocalypse: if you ever played at Milliways and haven't checked in for a while, you may be interested in the below.

That's it for now; I'm off to face the day. Have a good weekend, everyone!

They're using the opportunity to free up many old and retired characters for play, as well as to preserve as much of Milliways' history on Dreamwidth as possible against the possibility of LJ going kersplut.
