much more interesting than grant proposals

There is a bird in my kitchen.

Well, actually out in the back porch/sunroom, but close enough. He's a fluffy little exhausted fledgling sparrow who is henceforth to be known as Andrew.

Andrew was discovered in a fluffed-up ball clinging to the table outside on the patio. He had his head tucked under his wing, and was shivering, and trying to find shelter there from the six inches or more of snow that we have so far and which is supposed to go on falling all night.

As storms are not good for tiny birds, agonistes and I hastily prepped a refuge for him, and then I went out in the snow to get him.

He's definitely not a nestling, but he was such a tired fledgling that he couldn't even fly up to the top of the fence. He flutter-hopped away a couple of times, then sat still and let me wrap him in a towel and pick him up.

Now he's settled in a giant plastic bin for the evening, with water and food and the top loosely on to let air flow while still keeping birds in and cats out. He's warm and dry and still fluffy, and has fallen back asleep.

We'll let him go again in the daylight, once the snow's melted. But for now?

There's a bird in my kitchen.
