it's been a kaleidoscope sort of day

Has it really been that long since I updated? Wow. I'll have to see about breaking the radio silence more often around here.

Right now it's nine degrees (Fahrenheit; -13 Celsius) here, a temperature which has held pretty steady all day. Of course, given that I was fortunate enough to actually have this day off of work, nothing would do but that I bundle up in several layers of clothes and a coat, then set off to walk down a few blocks to the neighborhood coffee shop and hardware store.

(Those are two separate businesses, not one combined one, but wouldn't it be neat if they were?)

Despite the cold, it was a nice walk. Everything's crisp when the air's that chill, and the dusting of snow over everything made it all look clean and beautiful. Now I'm back at my desk, sorting through a small mountain of paperwork and setting up things for the new semester -- which starts tomorrow, actually, although my first class isn't until Wednesday. That's all right, as I've still got a list of items to complete before I venture forth to the new campus to settle in for the last semester of classwork.

That's right. Barring any unpleasant surprises, it's my last semester of actual classwork. Everything after this is research, presentation, defense, and writeup. I admit that I am at once terrified and delighted by the prospect. In the meantime, however, I've got any of a number of things to take care of first, so I'm not looking down the road that far ahead. Between this semester's schedule and the oncoming workload at my job --

(Side note: I need a code name for the company, I think. Anyone have any ideas? And no, I can't use 'Global Dynamics,' neenie's got that one locked in.)

-- er, where was I? Right. Between one thing and the other, these days I feel more than a little like some rattletrap windup clockwork automaton, ricocheting between one project after another with metronome-regular precision... at least as long as the gears hold together. It's a little bit odd, as feelings go. Not too bad, but definitely a little odd.

And speaking of such things, the timer beeping quietly in the background informs me that it's time to retrieve the next batch of laundry, after which I will set about unpacking the sterling silver coffee service that arrived today without notice in a shipment from the family home. My parents have taken to collecting bargains at auction, you see. Occasionally something unexpected turns up on my doorstep as a result-- but some of the results are nice.

Here's hoping this Monday has been full of pleasant surprises for everyone else, too.

family, work, a day in the life, school
