the bittersweet sxsw experience
part of me is bummed that i can't fully enjoy sxsw this year since i have to work. that's the big giant part of me. then there's a teeny tiny part of me that's relieved that i'm going to get some sleep. i'm still going to some shows and i'm thinking i might hit somewhere between 15-20 acts in the next four days, but nothing close to how many i've seen in the previous years.
today was a little lacking in options especially since i didn't get off until 4.30. tom (yes, that tom from chicago) texted me this morning asking me to call him when i got off work. and i did. and i was happy to see him. nothing weird, nothing awkward. i met him soon after i got downtown and he gave me a giant hug, convinced the door people to let me into the party he was at even though i didn't have a badge, and introduced me to his bandmates. matt remembered me from last year and gave me a big hug too. it was all really, really nice. i told fernando a little while ago that it was the first time in a looooooooooooooooong while that i've hung out with people i wasn't either related to or sleeping with. it was nice to laugh and joke around and just hang out.
we saw hot springs from canada and then left that party. the ice cream man was outside and somehow they had never heard of the ice cream man, but i just yelled "ICE CREAM MAN!!" they looked at me funny. i looked at them funny and said, "FREE ICE CREAM!" tom and matt screamed "FREE ICE CREAM!" and we all rushed to the van. we chatted and ate ice cream, walked around and finally settled on dinner. that was fun too, and involved tom jumping over the patio fence every time he saw someone on the street that he had met before. it was fun.
during the middle of dinner, tom asked mike for his notebook and opened it to the front page before handing it to me.

he wrote a song about me on his flight back to chicago last year. *someone* *wrote* *a* *song* *about* *me*! that's one of the top ten things i wanted to do/someone else to do for me before i died. there's a song about me! it made my really awful day so much better.
around eight they headed to showcases and i headed back to my car. i'm going back tomorrow afternoon since there's so much more to choose from. i'm excited.
