was it worth it?

Content warnings: major character death

I was surprised and sad when Buffy was killed off, but George's death gutted me. I stayed up way too late Tuesday night, listening through the last two hours. When I got to George's last transmission, I was crying so hard that I was -- glad? not the right word, but. It was good that I was listening to it instead of reading it. And awful at the same time. I really liked the narrator for George, and her reading of George's death scene was visceral and heartbreaking. I don't think I've been that emotionally impacted by a scene since reading The Hunger Games trilogy over five years ago. Movie and TV show deaths don't usually get me the same way, I think because movies aren't long enough to really pack as much of an emotional punch unless the filmmakers really know what they're doing, and TV showrunners often aren't ballsy enough to kill off a main character.

I didn't think I could handle continuing the trilogy when I initially finished the book Tuesday night, but now that I've listened to the preview of Deadline at the end of Feed and taken a few days to process, I'm pretty sure I am going to listen to the other two books. I was really disappointed to find out that the narrator for Shaun was different in the second audiobook, but what can you do.

I am taking a break before I move onto Deadline, though. I started The Vegetarian yesterday, which has the benefit of being short and also "literary" enough that it's easy for me not to get emotionally attached to any of the characters.

(Also, wow was George and Shaun's relationship SUPER incesty, but I don't know if I ship them, actually? I read some fic on AO3, and it wasn't really what I wanted.)
