I've been hearing stuff on the radio and reading up about it, and the one thing I'm taking away from it all is that the community by and large is stupid when it comes to crime and trials.
It doesn't matter if the jury takes 1 hour, 5 hours, or deliberates from the afternoon right into the next day. People will always think they know better than the judge and jury who sat in the court room for days and witnessed all the evidence, who hashed it out among themselves in what can be quite heated debate. The verdict was not guilty? Oh woe! They let the evil criminal walk free when it's obvious they were guilty! The verdict was guilty? Oh woe! The criminal has been sentenced, but surely the sentence isn't harsh enough. He's evil and needs to be punished more! Oh, but it doesn't matter how much they are punished either - even if it could be the death penalty. Oh woe! It's good they are getting punished, but nothing will ever be enough to assuage the pain/loss the victims have.
I mean, seriously. It's a case of no matter what happens in the justice system, the community will still think that it wasn't the right decision. The news pounces on each story about trials like it's new material, but they could virtually be using a form letter for all the originality it shows.
Just. Shut. Up. Already.
