The Birthday Party

Sep 14, 2005 09:17

Thursday evening, 5 pm. The furniture in Barry's room, spare as it was, was pushed from the "den" to the "bedroom" to make way for the tables. Six of them, round, each with four folding chairs, even though he didn't think that many would be coming. Each table had a maroon fabric tablecloth, though the plates and utensils were disposable (though ( Read more... )

Guppy peers around the door to see if the room is ready, then comes in with Helen, who has a package wrapped in a gold cloth and is wearing a turquoise strapless knee length dress. Guppy is in a smart suit with a dark green tie, and is carrying a small flat package and a bottle of wine.

[ooc: Helen-mun isn't here yet. Guppy-mun will have to go to bed at midnight GMT (*headdesks*) but will be around again tomorrow.]

"Ah, welcome. Good to see you, Guppy.

"And how long has it been, Helen?" Barry smiles effusively as he shakes Guppy's hand.

Guppy smiles. "Good to see you too. Nice place you have here."

He hands Barry the bottle of wine.

[ooc: Helen-mun operates on EST so she won't be up yet.]

"The perks of being on staff, I guess. Though compared to Mel and Lilly's room, this is an SRO hotel room on the Bowery." He takes the wine.

"Hmmm. I think this is good stuff. I'll chill it a bit and open it later."

[ooc: it's debatable whether I am awake, either. :)]

Guppy whose mun is teetotal and doesn't have a clue what is a good wine and what isn't hopes it is good stuff and that the chap at the wine shop wasn't ripping him off.

"I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting the birthday girl before tonight. Is she your wife?"

Before the invitation, he'd never really thought about whether Barry was married or not.

Barry gives a good eyebrow raise.

"Funny. I guess we get so caught up in serious Bar stuff when we talk that I actually haven't told you about Sara.

"We are quite seriously involved, and quite happy, but we aren't married." A raft of thoughts - about how he can't marry again when his time in the Bar is bound to run out, about how he never expected to be so invovled with someone and not be married, and about how much he feels she's like a wife anyway - run by fast but go unsaid.

"I think you'll like her. And surely Helen has mentioned Sara, right?"

"Well I asked Helen after we got the invitation so that I would have some idea what to get Sara for her birthday." Guppy replies, indicating the flat package. "But she didn't say exactly how you were related, and I thought I ought to check to avoid any embarrassment."

He smiles. "We do usually end up talking business, yes. Neither of us seem to be completely off-duty very often. However, short of a major incident I won't be rushing off on you tonight, and we've had one of those already this week. Even by Holby standards, twice in one week would be extremely unlucky."

Barry is curious about what Guppy means. However...

"Then tell you what. Let's not talk shop today. No medical stuff, no security reports. We can leave for later. Instead, just small talk of the sort you find at parties." He grins, and then pauses.

"Oh, before I forget, so you won't be shocked. Wally West is back in the Bar, and I invited him if he's around. But he's not the kid you remember. He's from some time later. An adult. Which is weird, but typical of this place."

[ooc: slowtime - will continue when I get to work]

"He's an adult?"

That's weird

"I was going to take him on a trip to England as a kid. If he still wants to go, he's had to wait an awfully long time. Although at least now he'll be able to come on his own."

[ooc: ok. I'll be offline for a little while when I have lunch but will be back at 1ish. Helen-mun might be around by then.]

"The funny thing is, he's probably been to Britain by now. But who knows? Heroes lead the kind of lives that mean you go somewhere but you don't see it. Lots of places I've been to, like Australia, and good chunks of America, that I really can't say I've seen.

"I'm going to get out the drinks. You want anything?" Barry points at the fridge.

"Yes please, what have you got?"

He opens the fridge.

"Aside from wine, we have..." He begins to remove the bottles at high speed.

"Coke, Soder, Diet Soder, Tab, Buzz Cola, Fanta orange soda, club soda, orange juice, lemonade, iced tea, and decaf Diet Soder."

Guppy thinks for a moment. Although he's not on call he doesn't want too much alcohol tonight, if he's going to be able to get up in time for work tomorrow.

"An iced tea would be nice please."

Barry pours an iced tea and then a club soda for himself, adding just a touch of wine to make a spritzer.

"Here you go.

"So, let me ask - you grow up in Holby?" And of Barry goes to small talk.

"Thanks."

Guppy sips the iced tea.

"Yes, that's right. My parents still live there now and my father works at the same hospital as I do. I lived with my parents until not that long ago because I wasn't eligable for accommodation at med school, living in the same place."

"Can't say I ever heard of Holby before we met. You like living there, I take it?"

"And you father, he's a doctor as well?"
