The Birthday Party

Sep 14, 2005 09:17

Thursday evening, 5 pm. The furniture in Barry's room, spare as it was, was pushed from the "den" to the "bedroom" to make way for the tables. Six of them, round, each with four folding chairs, even though he didn't think that many would be coming. Each table had a maroon fabric tablecloth, though the plates and utensils were disposable (though ( Read more... )

A familiar blond head pokes around the door. "Hello?"

"Catherine, come in!" Sara greets her at the door with a smile. "How are you?"

[OOC: Sorry, been fiddling with icons ;)]

"Great to see you and Barry..." Catherine hugs her tightly--and presents her proudly with a wrapped present. "Happy birthday!"

[OOC: No worries. I'm darting back and forth between two games myself.]

"Thank you! Should I worry what this is?" It's a perfectly valid question. She hasn't forgotten the pranks that had been pulled during her time at the lab.

"Barry, this is my dear friend Catherine Willows. Catherine, Barry Allen."

"I don't believe we've had the pleasure," he says as he extends his hand. "You worked with Sara, right?"

"Worry? Why in the world would you worry?" Catherine looks perfectly innocent and harmless as Sara, even more wary, handles the package like an active ticking bomb. "Really, it's nothing..."

She shakes hands with Barry gladly, grinning at him with a nod. "It's been a pleasure--I still miss seeing her there, so do the rest of us."

"Right...I think I'll open this last." She sets it down with the other gifts.

"I received an email from Ecklie, offering a full apology and a position as a consultant. Apparently no one's come forward to fill my spot." She shrugs. "I'll admit part of me is tempted."

There had been a table between Naraht's hoverchair and Catherine as she came in. After Barry introduces himself, she comes over and waits politely with an impish smile on her face.

"Hi, there," Catherine winks as she spots her. "What's your name?"

Catherine gets points for not going bug-eyed at the fishtail. Naraht grins and holds out a web-fingered hand.

"I'm Naraht. Dahai Iohor Naraht, actually, but Naraht is my casual name. And you're Catherine, right?"

"That's me, Catherine Willows," she replies amiably, carefully shaking the webby hand. "Where are you from?"

"Originally, Janus VI," she says. "But, when I'm not here, I'm serving aboard the Enterprise. I've already gathered you are from Sara's world. Are you also in CSI?"

"I'm a CSI, too, yes," she smiles, leaning back against the wall. "Is the Enterprise a ship at sea?"

Naraht chuckles. "If you're interested, the late 20th/early 21st century has become known as the Dawn of Forensic Science," she remarks. "And, no, the Enterprise is a starship for the United Federation of Planets."

Naraht shrugs. "I'm from a little ways down the road, so to speak."

"Gosh, I'm glad to know we're so advanced," Catherine murmurs wryly, raising an eyebrow. "Just how much better does it get from here on in?"

"A starship? You mean, like a space shuttle?" She's instantly intrigued. "How do you make interstellar flights?"

"Hey, that's a complement. You're regarded as the founders of it," Naraht says. "I mean, before then, not many people were even asking the question, if I recall correctly." She chuckles. "I have a friend in forensics back home. She'll go on for hours about how fast scientists of your time started putting together the data once the questions were ask. Said it was a testiment to how quickly knowledge could be advanced when someone puts their mind to it. And, believe me, you'll only pick up speed from where you are now."

She chuckles inwardly at the comparison (Naraht's seen archive footage of the old shuttles). "Something like that. As for interstellar flight...I suppose you're wondering how we get around that pesky issue of the speed of light. That's what warp engines are for. If getting from point A to point B in regular space takes too long, take a short cut through another type of space."
