Oh, science. I just read the above line in a description for an ATLA Zutara fanart for an explanation as to how Zuko dies in her alternative world. Only, it wasn't ironic, and it was meant seriously. This only made me laugh harder.
"He had a cough, it turned into death." (comma splice their own)
HAHAHAHAHA...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA~!
Oh, man.
Actually, this reminds me, as I used it in the above, on one of my bizarre efforts in my world to remain as consistent as possible in my beliefs. See, I'm a proclaimed atheist--I really do not believe in a god of any sort at this time in my life. All faith that I have is placed in "science" (which is really a very small word for a very large field, but whatever) and so it seems...I dunno, incongruous to keep saying things like, "God bless you" or "Oh my god" or "Jesus Christ!" So, as a partial gag and partial serious endeavor to eliminate the god vocabulary from my daily self-expression, I've started doing things like replace "god" with "science."
And as I said, it's partially just a sort of, haha lol, type of thing. BUT. Another part is in earnest, as I feel like the acceptance of things like god-based language as the "norm" as something that an atheist just has to "ignore" is the kind of unfairness that goes against the principles of justice for freedom of self-expression in the world. It's not a very small matter in my opinion to have everything talk about "god" as if it's a done deal--that it's a GIVEN. So, since I don't believe in "god" I don't think that I should have to use the language in that way.
Additionally, it's a gesture of respect. It's the same reason why I won't go to Church, even though it'd be a great way to meet people; I don't want to disrespect their beliefs. For someone else, "god" isn't just a word, it's a powerful belief that guides his or her life. There's no real good reason why I should use it in the obviously profane or just cavalier way that I would, and not replace it with something instead that *I* care about.
So! It's "Oh, Science!" and "Oh my science" and "Science bless you!" for me.
Speaking of science, I need to go have breakfast. I'm starving.
PS--Things like my userpic don't have to change though. I'm all for appreciating other people's use of the "god" word, particularly in a humorous way, I just don't think it's imperative that *I* use it.
