HPV Vaccine

:: sighs ::

Can I just mention that my issue with mandated vaccination has NOTHING to do with the encouragement of premarital sex? I think that argument is about as ineffective as they come. Way to have trust in your daughters. The following is a rant. I have cut it so you don't have to read it unless you want.

I dislike it because we're not talking easily communicable diseases here. This isn't a chance thing. It's an STD. It's a choice - excluding those cases of rape. So in my opinion, the vaccine should be a choice. And yes, apparently parents will be able to make request for it to be waived, but why should they need to do so? It bothers me on this gut level I can't explain.

Additionally, isn't it interesting that the whole impetous for this would be Merck deciding the legislation should pass it? Wow - shocker. The company that makes it, wants to sell it. How long has it been out? Have we seen what it can do or can't do? With all the hype about the dangers of vaccines anyway, why are we shoving another one on people? Wait, no, not people - females. Yeah, that one bugs me too. Does this vaccine not protect men from getting warts all over their penises? Because hey, that's a little unsightly and probably painful. Maybe we should make them too. No, because it doesn't kill them. Right. Forgot that. So there's the logic behind it. STDs suck it to women more than men generally speaking. So here's one more thing to make it all suck. A really expensive, mandated vaccine you have to make special requests to get waived.

The bitter level on this thing really surprises me. It may have to do with my overall crap attitude of the day. I just find it deeply frustrating. All of it. Not because I think my daughter is suddenly going to start sleeping with every Joe she meets because she has this vax, but because why are going to assume she is? If she wants it, fine, she can have it. I just hope she's smart enough to know that just because it keeps you safe from four of many different HPV strains it doesn't protect her from AIDS, Herpes, PID, Gonorrhea, or the plethora of other STDs. Not to mention good ol' fashioned pregnancy.

Why aren't we mandating that parents teach their kids or the schools do it? Why is UT so backwards that there is NOTHING taught in their schools but abstinance? Why is it that we've decided in other places that abstinence is a thing of the past? Why are we not mandating classes for parents and their kids to be educated so that they get that one shot isn't going to save their kids from dying? It's not. In fact, this vaccine is so unknown that they're not sure if later, upkeep vaccinations will be necessary.

Anyway, have a nice day.
