Transitioning into near full-time work

Here goes another attempt to write in my LJ, shooting for several times a week. I hope this succeeds. Still, random updates are better than no updates, right?

I survived training at PetSmart, but the videos were shoot-yourself-in-the-head-possibly-Persona 3-style bad, as all training videos are. The only problem was instead of one or two old school VHS tapes, I had to watch about seven DVDs. I started out upbeat and went downhill as video watching extended past two hours. At least some of the videos could be called unintentionally hilarious. But this week PetSmart has me working 23 hours, plus coming in for days that I'm not scheduled for. In reality I only wanted to work 16 to 20 hours per week, so I hope this is just for training purposes. In any event I'll have to talk with the mangers again about making sure I work no more then 20 hours per week.

Asking for fewer hours at a job when so many can't even find work may sound selfish, but I'm still employed at UPS. UPS is and will always be a physically strenuous job that makes up for the punishment with decent pay. At the rate I'm going I'm set to work 50 hour weeks for 10 to 12 hours at a time per day. I don't want to go from part-time work to work-yourself-todeath-mode, this upsets me because I am left with less time to write or do anything journalism related. I think I may use the extra cash to pay off more debt (though I wasn't saddled with much of it outside of student loans to begin with) and buff up my savings accounts. Beyond that I'll play it by ear, so to speak.

And I'm doing a double shift at UPS today in near 100 degree weather. It's going to be a LONG day.

life, work
