“You have daisies in your hair. You look like a druid.”

Lavender blinked yawned, sitting up. “I what?” She raised her hand to her hair, gently touching it. There were daisies threaded through it and she plucked one, twisting it between her fingers. She pouted playfully. “This is why I shouldn’t fall asleep in the garden.” Flicking the flower at Charlie, she added, “Otherwise my husband puts flowers in my hair.” She hadn’t intended to fall asleep, but she’d been exhausted after they’d finished their picnic and lying down on the blanket and closing her eyes had been all too tempting.

He held up his hands in protest. “It wasn’t me!” Charlie tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, leaning over to kiss her on the forehead. “This time,” he added quickly.

Charlie grinned, making Lavender roll her eyes. “Well,” she said finally, “if it wasn’t you, then it must have been…” There was a giggle behind her and Lavender turned, unable to hide her smile. “Rosie Posie.” She held out her arms. “Come here, my little flower girl.”

The energetic three-year-old launched into her arms, laughing. “Mummy has pretty hair.”

Lavender tweaked her sun hat, tugging it off to plant a kiss on the top of her red hair. “Not as pretty as yours.” She put the hat back on; Rosie was far too fair to go out in the sun without it. “You should have put the flowers in Daddy’s hair,” she said in a whisper, loud enough for Charlie to hear.

“Oi. Cheeky mare,” Charlie chided, nudging Lavender. Lavender stuck her tongue out at him.

“Daddy said no,” Rosie added solemnly. She started to play with the end of Lavender’s hair, teasing one of the daisies.

“Did he?” Lavender raised her eyebrows at Charlie, who shrugged.

“I didn’t think that they’d suit me.” He plucked a daisy from the grass, tucking it behind his ear with a grin. “See? Not my style at all.”

Lavender gave Rosie a quick squeeze. “We’ll get Daddy next time,” she promised her. “And put lots of lovely flowers in his hair.” Rosie grinned at Charlie; Lavender laughed and deposited their daughter on Charlie’s lap. “I think I’m going to go and make a nice cool drink. Does anyone want one?”

“Tea!” Rosie looked up at her hopefully.

“I said a cold drink,” Lavender teased, tapping her on the nose. She glanced up at Charlie, barely able to suppress her laughter.

“Orange!”

“Okay, orange juice. Why don’t you go up to the kitchen and find your favourite cup, yeah?”

Rosie nodded and clambered off Charlie’s lap. She dashed off up the garden to the house as fast as her little legs would carry her.

Lavender leant over, kissing Charlie gently. “Help me up,” she told him.

Rolling his eyes, Charlie got to his feet and held out his hand to help Lavender up. “You’re perfectly capable of getting up yourself.”

She pouted as she straightened up. “I won’t be able to in a couple of months.”

Charlie sighed. Sometimes, there was no reasoning with his girls. “Whatever you say, kitten.”

Lavender grinned, picking the daisy out from behind his ear. “I love it when you’re all subservient,” she murmured, arms twisting around his neck.

“Mummy! I want a drink!” Rosie stood by the backdoor, waving her favourite cup with the dragon handle. Then, she remembered to add, “Please!”

He smirked at her, hands resting on Lavender’s hips. “Considering how bossy you two are, am I ever anything but?”
