What's this? I'm now a soccer fan?!
Well, not exactly, but it's been my good friend these past few weeks at home: I've gotten into watching the afternoon matches.
This afternoon was quite the entertaining mix. I cheering on the Brazil team, but did they really need to provoke the Ivory Coast's advances? There was a lot of drama in that game and I could have done without it.
The main problem of the game (despite the touchiness of the Ivory Coast players) was the referee and his calls. Started off with a goal by the Brazilian team with a unnoticed shoulder touch. I had mixed feelings about that because I wanted Brazil to get another goal, but at the same time, it should have been called off. But then later, Ivory Coast got a goal that shouldn't have counted as well. I knew something was wrong when Julio Caesar didn't dive for the ball and the Brazilian teammates threw their hands up. My dad explained that apparently he was "off-sided"--that something in the players formation was wrong--and that the goal shouldn't have counted.
Let's not forget Kaka's two yellow cards! The second one was absolutely bogus. Neither were watching where they were going, and the Ivory Coast player who ran into him got bumped in the chest, but then fell to the ground clutching his face. WTF?! At the same time, better he stay out the next game and come to the really important matches with a clean slate than carry over one yellow card to his future games.
That's soccer refereeing for you I suppose. It makes the figure skating judging system seem so objective and well balanced!
