“Can I have a hint?” Arizona begged.
“No.”
“Please?” she begged some more.
“No.”
“Are you taking me to that new hibachi restaurant that I keep telling you about? Where they do those crazy things with the knives and other utensil things while they cook your food in front of you?” Arizona asked hopefully. She had been waiting for a free night to take Callie there but their schedules had not been in sync the last few weeks.
“No,” Callie responded biting back her laughter as she tried to keep her stern face on.
Arizona sat back in her seat continuing to pout as she stared out the window trying to figure out Callie’s plans for the evening based on their location. As Callie turned off the highway onto the next exit, Arizona groaned as she saw the sports arena ahead and Callie gradually shifted into the flow of traffic headed towards the parking lot.
“Ughh we’re not going to an ice hockey game are we? You know I hate hockey. It’s worse than football,” Arizona muttered as she put her elbow on the car door to prop her head on.
“I love football,” Callie said with a smirk.
“Yes I know. Although I think you only like it because of the surgeries,” Arizona laughed recalling how often Callie would tell her of patients, young and old, that had ended up in her care because of a football game.
“Hmm...maybe,” Callie agreed shooting a smile Arizona’s way before relenting a bit, “We are not going to a hockey game.”
“But we are going to the hockey arena?” Arizona questioned frustrated at Callie’s lack of sharing.
Callie leaned over to the radio, turning up the volume. “Hey babe listen you love this song,” she said grinning over at Arizona hoping to distract her from her incessant questioning.
“Arghh fine. You’re lucky I do love this song,” Arizona conceded dropping her guessing game with Callie as she hummed along to the radio.
A few minutes later, the couple had pulled into the parking lot and Callie heard a gasp from the passenger seat.
“You got me tickets to Toy Story on Ice?” Arizona exclaimed as she stepped out of the car and caught a glimpse of the sign advertising that evening’s event and all the families with young children headed inside. “You’re the best girlfriend ever,” she gushed in mock awe.
“I didn’t just get you tickets. I got us tickets,” Callie said as she held up two tickets across the roof of her car for her girlfriend’s inspection.
Arizona skipped around the front of the car grabbing Callie’s face for a kiss before throwing her arms around her girlfriend. “You’re really going to come in? And sit in the seat next to me, not hang around the back or outside or anything?”
“Yep,” Callie confirmed trying to hold back her smile at her excited girlfriend bouncing in front of her.
“Are you going to eat a crazy bad for you sugary food that you only find at events like this?”
Callie laughed envisioning just how much more excited Arizona was going to be after getting her fair share of sugary snacks. “Well considering I missed lunch for an emergency surgery, I’m pretty sure I’ll be eating something.”
Arizona continued to bounce on her heels as Callie tightened her hold on her girlfriend’s hips just a bit. “Will you get a glow in the dark light thingy and spin it around?”
“Ah no,” Callie responded shaking her head.
“Hmph. Ok,” Arizona was willing to give her that one. “Well let’s go already!” she exclaimed dropping her arms from Callie’s shoulders and grabbing her hand, pulling her towards the entrance.
As Callie quickened her step to keep up with her excited girlfriend, she pulled back slightly on their joined hands, “Babe you can loosen your grip a bit. I said I was coming in. I got you the tickets, I drove you here, I’m not going to bail now,” she confirmed.
Arizona slowed up her pace, grinning at Callie before letting go of her hand and wrapping her arm around Callie’s. “I know. I’m just excited.”
After holding the door open for Arizona, Callie walked through the entrance and handed their tickets to the agent. As their tickets were swiped, they stepped through the revolver gates before meeting on the other side. It was already quite crowded as parents tried to keep track of their kids in the midst of locating their seat sections and juggling their various souvenirs and food and drinks.
Arizona took hold of Callie’s hand again as they stepped further into the arena away from the mass of people at the entrance.
“So last month when we saw the advertisement on tv and I said I wanted to come, you said and I quote ‘I’d rather you ask me to dress up as Santa with Christina as my elf’”, Arizona repeated in her best Callie impression, “Was that all just to trick me into thinking you wouldn’t come?”
“Did you just try to do me?” Callie asked titling her head to the side in amusement.
“Oh come on that was a great impression!” Arizona insisted.
“That wasn’t anything like me!” Callie complained good-naturedly before signaling for them to start walking again. “So where to first?” she asked changing topics.
Arizona looked around like a kid in a candy store, her eyes lighting up at all the booths with the souvenirs and the food carts with overly expensive but oh so good treats. “Umm how about we grab something to eat and then head to our seats?”
Callie looked over at Arizona surprised at her suggestion, “Orrr,” she drew out knowing Arizona was trying to placate her, “we could check out the souvenir stand and get you one of those light thingies that I know you want.”
“Ok seriously what did you do?” Arizona asked coming to a stop and turning towards Callie.
“What?” Callie asked squishing her face in confusion.
“I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that you willingly went and bought tickets and you’re here with me. You could have just bought the tickets and had me come with someone else you know. Are you trying to make up for something?” Arizona asked, suspicion clouding her voice.
Callie shook her head, “I’m not trying to make up for anything. This is my gift to you. I want you to have a good time. It’s date night and tonight we’re doing something you want to do so don’t hold back.” Callie paused to consider her statement weary of what that offer would mean, “Or maybe just hold back a little,” she said with a grin. “So let’s check out the souvenirs and then we’ll grab some food and be in our seats for the start of the show. Ok?”
Arizona gazed into Callie’s eyes, the love and sincerity shining through.
“I’m so buying you the most bad ass souvenir there is. I bet there’s a t-shirt for Woody in leather on a motorcycle or something,” Arizona teased.
“Oh boy,” Callie sighed. “I’ll take my chances with the ‘or something’,” Callie teased back before leaning over to place a quick kiss on Arizona’s lips.

“Thank you Calliope. This was an awesome night. I feel so happy and…and…ecstatic,” Arizona giggled to herself, realizing how silly she sounded. The couple had left the arena and were walking across the parking lot in the direction of their car. Arizona looked over towards her girlfriend. “Did you have fun?” she asked.
“I did. This is my ecstatic face,” Callie said in a monotone voice causing Arizona to burst out in laughter.
Callie cracked a smile before continuing, “I’ll admit it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Those guys can really skate.” Callie may not be on the same level as her girlfriend when it came to showing her enthusiasm but she did enjoy watching the amazing tricks the skaters could do on the ice - many dressed in wild costumes no less.
As they continued walking through the parking lot towards their car, Arizona swung their entwined hands back and forth, “And at least it was Toy Story. A couple of years ago it was a show all about the Disney princesses. I think that might have been a little much for you.”
“Oh I don’t know,” Callie disagreed. “All the Disney stories have the same theme. Besides you make it seem like I have a thing against princesses.”
Arizona quirked an eyebrow, “Calliope, if I so much as hint that we’re going to watch one of the girly Disney movies or really almost any animated movie, you roll your eyes and hide under the pillow.”
“Hey that was one time!” Callie argued. “I had worked a crazy double shift and just wanted to come home and relax with you. Little Mermaid isn’t exactly relaxing for me.”
“Ooook,” Arizona grinned but held back her argument on the ‘one time’ response from Callie.
“Besides what’s not to like about princesses? They’re gorgeous, very often have magical powers, and always end up with their one true love. Kinda like you,” Callie suggested with a smirk.
“I bet you never imagined being with a Disney princess did you?” Arizona joked.
“Nope. I can honestly say before I met you that I never dreamed of marrying my Disney princess…or prince. I was more a superhero kind of girl,” Callie said reminiscing on her own favorite childhood characters.
Arizona laughed, “That doesn’t surprise me. So what’s next? Do you have anything else planned for date night?”
“Nope this was it. I kind of figured this was enough. Why? Where do you want to go?” Callie asked as they arrived back at her car, stopping next to the driver’s side door.
Arizona just shook her head in response. “Just home. I have some thanking to do,” she grinned at Callie before leaning in for a kiss. As she broke away, she reached behind Callie and opened the door. As Callie climbed in and got herself situated, Arizona looked at her in thought as the realization struck, “So wow I’m going to have to top this for our next date night.”
“Yup. You better start planning now. Seahawks tickets are hard to come by,” Callie smirked before closing her door and waiting for Arizona to come around and get in the car herself.
“I suppose that’s only fair. It would be fun to get a foam finger,” Arizona said as she contemplated how to make the football game a little more bearable.
Callie just shook her head at her girlfriend’s antics laughing at how Arizona could find the child like fun in anything they did. She pulled the car out into the line of vehicles leaving the parking lot before moving her right hand to Arizona’s seat and finding her hand. “Hey no playing with your light thing in the car. It’s distracting,” she scolded as the light was bouncing around the dark car.
Arizona pouted but agreed and put the light back in the bag and pulling out another souvenir. “Ok. How about my Jesse the Cowgirl talking doll? The kids are going to get a kick out of this. I can’t wait to show them tomorrow,” Arizona responded, the anxiousness evident in her voice. The Toy Story movies were a huge hit on the Ped’s floor and Arizona was anxious to tell them about the skating show. She had convinced Callie that her story just wouldn’t be complete without plenty of toys and souvenirs to show the kids. Kids love show and tell, she had argued. Plus many of the kids wouldn’t be able to go to the show themselves any time soon.
“Ok fine. But get it out of your system now because once we get home, it’s staying in the bag out in the living room for the night. No talking cowgirls in the bedroom,” Callie warned teasingly.
“You got it,” Arizona said reaching out with a finger on their joined hands to pull the cord while she held the doll in her right hand. ‘You’re the best friend a cowgirl could have. Yeeee-ha’ the toy doll squawked. Arizona couldn’t help but chuckle, she found her new toy to be both hilarious and adorable. Plus she was in such a great mood. Callie’s surprise choice for their date night had been perfect and she loved that Callie knew her so well.
“Thank goodness this wasn’t our first date. I’m not sure there would’ve been a second,” Callie mumbled holding back on the laughter that threatened to spill at any moment at the sight of Arizona so enthralled with her new toys.
Arizona gasped, mildly offended at Callie’s statement, as she whipped her head to fix Callie with a withering glare. “Are you serious? This was your pick for date night. You don’t get to make fun of me for enjoying the night that you yourself planned.”
“I’m kidding. I’m kidding,” Callie soothed leaning over and kissing away the pout on Arizona’s lips.
“Hmph. I hope so. Besides the date isn’t over yet,” Arizona said dropping her voice while dragging her finger along the silky smooth skin of Callie’s collarbone just above the fabric of her v-neck sweater, staring at the goosebumps that were left behind. Arizona smiled at the effect she had on Callie before leaning back on her seat. “Traffic’s moving,” Arizona said lightly with a smirk as Callie regretfully snapped back from her Arizona-induced haze and saw that the cars in front of her had started moving again and were exiting the lot.
“Arghh such a tease,” Callie protested leaning back on her own seat, trying to re-focus on the task of driving.
“Not for long,” Arizona sing-songed, giving Callie’s hand a squeeze. She paused a moment, shooting a pensive look Callie’s way, before continuing, “You know I think tonight is in my list of top five dates with you. Once we get home, let’s see if we can move it up to the top three,” Arizona suggested willing her voice to keep an even tone to tease Callie even further.
Callie peeked over quickly to Arizona, trying to keep her eyes on the car ahead of her as traffic was starting to break up, but wanting to gauge the seriousness of Arizona’s statement. The darkened lust filled blue eyes staring back at her were a dead giveaway.
“So this ice show…are you sure it only comes around once a year?” Callie asked as the sound of her girlfriend’s laughter filled the car. Arizona brought their joined hands to her lips in response; before promptly gave another tug of the string and letting the screechy voice of the cowgirl fill the car once more.
