Summary: "A crime I have committed, time and time again. When will this war be over? When will this killing end?!"

Through A Warrior's Eyes
Lifting my hands high, I can see his face:
Eyes suppliant for mercy, eyes pleading for grace.
But I know what I can’t give and now is not the time.
So I close my eyes in sorrow; I won’t witness this crime.

A crime I have committed, time and time again.
When will this war be over? When will this killing end?!
I bring my hands down, sword clashing against his chest.
Opened eyes then showed me bright red upon his gaping flesh.

I stared blankly at him, his face was etched with pain.
They said this war would profit us, but how can slaughter bring gain?
Many a night I slumbered, replaying that ghastly scene
Remembering that man’s face, orbs lustered with death’s evil gleam.

I had lost my parents; they were subject to a disease.
But whose father had I struck down, as I swung my axe with ease?
And when I lifted my bow and arrow to shoot down the enemy,
Will his saddened comrades then come to take down me?

Amidst the battle cries, you can hear loud and clear
The widows lamenting for those they once held dear.
When will the children sing again once more?
For in their innocent eyes they saw the battle gore.

Stand tall now, the last of the battle is done.
And by those standing, I guess it was us who won.
Yet survey the battlefield, and you’ll see who has really lost.
My companions, dead: dead as a flower caught in winter’s frost.

Clearly by the celebrations it was peace the war had brought.
But I refuse to forget the turmoil it also wrought.
The warriors in the battles, their hands are forever blood-stained,
And I can see through their eyes the smiles and laughs they feigned.

The beautiful cities, now ground to the dirt.
Not to mention the air filled with pain and hurt.
One year later and I can’t seem to forget the scars the war left behind.
About the lives of my fallen partners: true happiness they’ll never find.

But my lover stares me in the eyes and reaches for my hand,
“This I must say to you and then you’ll finally understand.
Your comrades have found friendship, peace, love, and happiness in you.
And through their sacrifices and your resolve these people have hope anew.”

Turning to my window, I stare out and what then do I see?
Many children laughing, singing, dancing in the prospect of being free.
It was then at long last I was able to understand that my comrades died not in vain,
To see peace dance in a child’s eyes, to see a widow smile again, yes, I count this as gain.

For many years, I wished, this tranquility will last,
So that never again will someone repeat my past.

AN: If anyone's wondering, this I based off of Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken. Although not specifically about only one character, it's written mostly from Eliwood's point of view. As he said when he spoke to Hector, he doesn't enjoy war: "As long as I concentrate on the foe before me, I'm fine. But if I imagine people, innocents caught in our political disputes..." or something to that effect. I'll look it up one day. However, many lines were taken from others' POV. Such as, "I had lost my parents; they were subject to a disease. But whose father had I struck down, as I swung my axe with ease?" That was obviously Hector. And, "And when I lifted my bow and arrow to shoot down the enemy, will his saddened comrades then come to take down me?" is from an archer's view. I wrote this poem specifically to the fact that no names or genders were disclosed. Thus you can basically infer that this poem can be about any FE character whatsoever. Except maybe Karel, he likes to kill people.
