I really wanted to like Avatar. I thought the trailers looked amazing.
But it just isnt there. CGI alone does not a watchable movie make and thats about all that is here. The story is utterly predictable and formulaic, the stuff thats supposed to draw you in and help you suspend disbelief just glares out and ruins what fascination the CGI does manage to create and the stock actors they have filling the unimaginatively written characters are like the final nail in a good looking coffin.
Its made a ton of money, which is a shame and a blessing both. A shame because now every halfass director with the budget for CGI will try and create the Next Big Thing, and a blessing because maybe out of the nine thousand movies this is sure to spawn, about three of them will be worth watching and they will be pretty good. They wont be the ones that the critics or fans like though, so they will take a little more work to find. Check here from time to time, old Uncle Bob will steer you in their direction.
I think I am going to give the Sherlock Holmes film a try next. I am excited about it and have high hopes...
