I just noticed a few things. Among them:
1. GOOD GOD MY PROFILE IS OUT-OF-DATE.
2. I haven't really updated in ages.
3. Which means that most of you have no idea where I am right now, haha.
Well, I'll tell you.
I'm in Ocean Springs, MS. It's right next to Biloxi, on the Gulf Coast. We're working with Habitat this round, building houses and shit. I'm learning things about construction. :3 I'm also learning new ways to injure myself. I have a lot of new skin/peeling old skin on one finger where a teensy piece of splinter board was stuck for roughly two weeks.
(Have I said what my team name is yet? I don't know. It's Delta 5.)
We work Tuesday-Saturday this round. It was kind of frustrating today, because it felt like a Saturday and yet most of the shops were closed. D.J. and I tried to go to the local coffee shop BUT IT WAS CLOSED even though there was a big sign that said 'OPEN ON SUNDAYS!'
Our best guess is that a) this is the South and b) the regular rules especially don't apply on a Saints game day.
So later we wandered a bit, found
an ice cream caboose, then cuddled on the beach as the sun set. Which is very nice. People should do that more often.
THEN I DOWNLOADED THE NEW DOCTOR WHO EPISODE. WOOT. And we watched it together. &hearts
Since I was in a very Doctor Who mood after that, I downloaded Rise of the Cybermen in MKV and we watched it. Age of Steel tomorrow. I am awesome.
Our living situation is a little, how to put this, challenging this round. It's awfully communal. The place is a warehouse transformed into volunteer housing for the Katrina rebuilding effort. There are a couple permanent rooms (such as they are) for NCCC teams. The guys and the girls are separated by a wall you can look over by standing on a bunk bed. Our walls do not really come close to reaching the ceiling. We can hear pretty much everything that happens, which can make Monday mornings kind of difficult. Housing staff has a regular work week, as do many weekly volunteer groups. Housing staff also likes to cackle. Loudly. Right next door.
Privacy-related difficulties aside, my only other real issue here is the No PDA rule. Argh. (Actually, IT MAY HAVE BEEN VIOLATED ONCE OR TWICE. Not in a major way though.) The staff is awesome. There are always interesting people to talk to. I really like the town. We live well within walking distance of the beach. PT has been fun lately -- some of the local AmeriCorps Directs host weekly Ultimate Frisbee games, and on Friday we did yoga on the beach as the sun set behind the pier and the Ocean Springs-Biloxi bridge, which was downright gorgeous.
We've had some team drama, but none too serious. It's a bit strange, actually, that I should say that considering we actually did lose a member. But that's a Very Complicated Situation which requires a lot of explanation.
Anyway, I'm doing well, I SPLURGED ON
SOCKS THE OTHER DAY, and I'm going to be home for the holidays (my birthday!) from 19 December to 3 January. Well. Evening of the 19th to obscenely early on the 3rd.
Love!
P.S. I de-privatelocked an entry I made during transition. For some reason, I found it necessary to write my reflection for my team's portfolio Not In MS Word. I have a fear of the blank page, I suppose! :P
