Okay, guys, put on your best librarian glasses. I need your help.
The facts, as they currently stand, are these: Last week I went a little crazy over Alexandra Fuller's memoir Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, which was completely fascinating and kind of horrifying, and made me feel embarrasingly grateful for my sheltered suburban upbringing. Then, by way of stalling, I re-read The Polysyllabic Spree, Nick Hornby's collection of readerly essays for The Believer, and started Oliver Sacks's new book, Musicophilia, for my bedside book (because nothing says "bedtime" like neurological disorders). And now...I just don't know. I need something that speaks to me, and nothing in the to-read stack(s) has much to say. What should I read next, flist?
Here's what I'm thinking: Fiction, contemporary, lighter than Philip Roth, better-written than Jennifer Weiner. Non-bodice-ripper romance encouraged but not necessary. Not a thriller. Not an Oprah book. (Maybe I just want to read The Time Traveler's Wife again. Is that bad?)
Hit me with your best shots.
