Tonight, listening to classical music, which I haven't done in a long time, I remembered a conversation I had with a friend a few years ago. We were arguing about whether the piano or the violin were more adept at conveying emotions. I don't think we concluded that argument with anything definitive. As a piano player, I'm actually biased against the piano. I blame the dreaded weekly pianos lessons as a kid. I don't hate the piano. In fact, it's made me more appreciative. There's no instrument better suited in flexibility for songwriting imo. I've always been partial to the violin because I'm a sicko who feels more for sad, heart-tugging music and I've always felt more pain was conveyed via strings.

But years later now, after my first complete listening of The Devil's Trill (sad of me), I think I've come to the conclusion that the the two are just different kinds of pain lol. The violin is a wailer, explosive and melodramatic. The sad songs on the piano are more of a quieter, poignant sadness. A hopeless, inner crying. Well, for the stuff I listen to anyways!
