when 6-year-old Zoey asked to do my hair, I said okay, immediately wary because as far as she knew, my hair was vastly different from hers, AND she was pulling it ridiculously hard. i was making sad and painful faces the whole way through. then..

"aaachoo!"
the unmistakable sound of a child's sneeze.

"zo, did you just...sneeze in my hair?"
"no! i did it in my hand back here."
(her aunt on the couch across from me starts nodding and silently mouthing "yes...she did.")

so i say,
"ewww!"
"i'm sorry, auntie ann!" (who is also short and asian, but has much shorter hair and a much larger chest than i do, i must add)
"I'm not auntie ann!"

the next time she sneezed she pulled her face away from me and also covered it with her free hand, which means the occupied hand had a fistful of my hair still in it. anyone familiar with sneeze dynamics knows that when that thing comes out, the whole body kind of seizes (or whatever you call it), meaning my head got yanked back by the ponytail. but at least it wasn't on my head again!

just another day in the extended family.
