I've noticed

A month or two ago I had an appointment with a dietician after my primary doctor told me I need to lose some weight. I wanted to learn more about what I should eat for all my issues, so I agreed to go.

The dietician was really helpful and was able to take into account all my unique stuff, and give me tailored advice. As part of that discussion I made it clear to her that I'm working on a lot of things in my life, and that while my health is important, loosing weight is really not a priority for me right now. We then talked a little about my depression and how that effects what I eat, and how I can make it easier to eat better foods when I'm having a hard time.

She made an observation that has really resonated with me ever since, and I want to share it with you. She said that when I feel that I have failed, I feel more depressed.

I thought that was an interesting connection to make, but didn't particular put much weight to it. But now after ruminating on it for a while, I think there is some truth to that on some level.

When I pay real close attention to how I feel I can sometimes notice the precise point in time when my mood starts to go down. Now that what she said is on my radar, I've noticed that some shifts in mood are preceded by some imperfection on my part.

Sometimes I'll get down on myself more than I should for not getting to bed at a reasonable time, or not remembering to take my meds at a particular time, or I'm doing poorly on the things I am working on fixing, or I forget to flip the laundry and it stays wet in the washer for a couple days, or ....

Feeling a little bad is normal, that's what drives us to make improvements and to do better next time, but I need to work on that bad habit of punishing myself too severely (even subconsciously) when I'm not perfect.

On a side note, I've lost about 15 pounds since I changed just a few small eating habits. The biggest change I made was to eat some fiber when I eat carbs and sugar. The more sugar, the more fiber. Apparently the fiber alongside the sugar lowers the glycemic index of the carbs, while still allowing you to feel full.

The other trick is to try and always have at least a small amount of fat and protein when I eat. The two together better satisfy my appetite for a longer time.

And I can have as much protein as I want- the more the better. She doesn't know why the other dieticians thought that I can't. I just have to be careful about the fat content of the meat. I need to minimize meat fat and have most fat come from vegetables or dairy.

But I also could have lost weight because I'm much happier now. I tend to loose weight when that happens.

Disclaimer- I have not gone back and read this post. Sorry for any typos. I'm gonna make a good decision and go to bed now.

*Goodbye Everybody. :)
