My friend and I may only be 16 and 17 but we're huge Beatles fans and so when I heard about the show I called her up and knew we'd be going. We were singing along with almost every single song. We even came and danced in front of the stage for a few of them. The two of us were over dancing by "Paul", who would look down sometimes and smile, which would only make us dissolve into giggles like a bunch of hopeless fangirls. The show was amazing! I may be too young to have seen the original Beatles but I've seen a couple of their movies and I own the Anthology set and GetBack! was so similar to the Beatles in stage performance I often forgot they were an impersonation band. It was fantastic. The costume changes only made the show even better. The show as a whole was... well just to awesome for words. I could have sat there for hours upon hours watching the band perform.
Also, I managed to solve my fashion dilemna. Friday night I went to Wal-mart with my mum and was just looking at the shoes. I had recently been reading
starmia's old journal and loved her new
Converse All Stars (sorry for snagging your pic, Bex!) but knew I'd never be able to get some in time of the concert OR afford any since I only had $91.03, £50.74. But I found some shoes by No Boundaries after looking through ALL the shoes in the shoes department, including the women's, men's, girls (which I grew out of AGES ago), boys, and YOUTH.
Then I found the shoes in the women's! *giggles* They were on the bottom shelf and of course I didn't look at them since the box was marked size "6" (Size 4½ in the U.K). Yeah... Haven't fit into those for ages, either. I usually wear 8½ or 9 (Size 7 to 7½ in the U.K.), depending on who it's by. Oddly enough, the shoe was actually TOO BIG on my foot! Turns out it was actually a size 8 (Size 6½ in the U.K). Still it was really weird because on the tag it said "Size 6".
On Saturday, I went to Pat's soccer game and it turns out their birthmum turned up and it was her weekend to have them. So then I dragged Chris and Mum shopping! All the way to Chesterfield Mall instead of Mid Rivers. But it's not really that far.
After about 3 unsuccessful hours of trying going into stores and seeing clothes that were NOT for a Beatles concert I was getting discouraged. I finally said, "Okay, I'll go to Old Navy and if I don't see anything there we can go home." Mainly because it was getting rather close to 5 o'clock and that's about what time my friend Nikki, who was going with me and picking me up, was getting off work. And I knew she was going to go home and take a shower and stuff before coming to get me and I needed time to get ready too!
So Chris and Mum ducked into this calendar shop, so Mum could look for her Debbie Mum calendar that she gets every year when I noticed this store called "Splash" and it looked rather funky. I was intrigued and stepped in. I wandered over to the screened tees. There were ones with Marilyn Monroe and Jimi Hendrix and other people of whom I didn't know. I was about to give up with I saw....
A peach coloured shirt with John and Yoko on it! A picture from their sit-in for peace! That 'Lay around and let your hair grow long' thing. It was the closest thing I had found to the Beatles. I quickly racked through the other shirts to see if there were any others. There was only one other one and it was the same. They were a small and medium.
My first thought, "SHIT!"
Why? Well... I've rather broad... and... not on the thin side. Or slim... or slender... OKAY?!?! STOP THE INTERROGATION!!!
But I thought, "What the hey..." and grabbed the medium and looked around to see if they had any other Beatles-like stuff. They didn't. Madonna, KISS, Elton John, the Doors, the Sex Pistols, but not the Beatles. Grr...
Some sales lady saw me wandering around and asked if I wanted to try on the shirt and I said yeah. So I did. It was a bit tight. Tighter than how I like my shirts. But I figured I could stretch it a bit with my arms. Also I'd have to put a tank top on underneath it since you could see right through it.
I came out (after changing back into my other shirt) and just asked if all the shirts like this were out on the rack. The person said yes but they could call over at the Galleria to see if they had any over there. I said no thanks. There was no way I'd be able to get it from there and be able to wear it to the concert. So I bought it from the store and just had to wear it a bit snug.
Exactly, $38.17 after tax, £21.27 in the U.K.
And thank God my tank top's hem didn't come up since the t-shirt's kept doing so. *giggles* But oh well.
For once I didn't care if people were staring at my boobs. *laughs like an idiot*
The show was called, "Tribute to John Lennon; Beatlemania". My friend, Nikki and I were puzzled as to why it was a tribute to John... I mean, on the radio commercial to which I found out about the concert, it didn't mention anything about a John tribute. And on the
Family Arena (where the concert was taking place) site, it didn't say anything about a John tribute either.
But on our tickets, it did.
The seating arrangements for the concert. Note the key. The ickle red line was where we were sitting.
It was on OCTOBER 9th, 2004... If you're not a Beatles fan that probably means nothing to you. And even if you are one it still might mean nothing. Well, if John Lennon was still alive it would have been his 64th birthday!
♪ begins singing 'When I'm 64' ♪
Okay... So the beginning part of this entry... tis what I tried to put in the
GetBack! Beatlemania guestbook. I don't think it worked though. But honestly, the show was amazing.
There was only one intermission and that was when the guys changed from their dark suits into their Sgt. Pepper outfits. And put on moustaches and John with his glasses. After a bunch of songs in those outfits, John and Ringo quickly ran offstage as the stage dimmed and instrumental 'Eleanor Rigby' played. You could see George and Paul on the stage if you were close enough.
They unbuttoned and removed their Sgt. Peppers jackets. As they were doing that, Nikki and I turned to each other with wide eyes and Nikki said, "THEY'RE STRIPPING!!!" and we giggled.
Paul pulled on a leather vest as he had on a white t-shirt underneath completing his outfit from the 'Let it Be' album cover. George had on his denim long sleeve shirt and jeans from the 'Abbey Road' cover. I don't know what outfit Ringo was wearing. It was... like black and white checkered with bright yellow in the middle and a black and white striped tie. The three of them performed one song together.
Then out struts John, taking his time, and the crowd went WILD! He had on a long wig, white sneakers, and the white suit from 'Abbey Road'. And then they sang "Come Together".
But towards the beginning when they sang "Twist and Shout", Nikki, Tami (Nikki's mum, who also came with her boyfriend), and I were up in front of the stage dancing and singing. Paul was playing and singing and he would look down at us (cause he was the closest to us and vice versa) and smile! And I swear, he and I made eye contact a bunch of times! He may not be the real Paul McCartney, but I don't care! He's younger than the real Paul. But unfortunately, not THAT young.
I seriously can die happily now.
It kind of became a game to see who could see the most of Ringo's face... We were blocked of view of his face because of one of the cymbals. I was like, "I saw from his eyes and up and from his neck down!!!" And then we finally saw all of him. He was a bit chubby. *giggles*
The closeness in vocal talent was just... mind-blowing. It literally sounded like John Lennon. George was pretty close too. And on the songs were Paul doesn't have to go REALLY high, the impersonator Paul sounded really good too. Ringo's voice was a bit high but his drumming was superb.
Other than Ringo's slight chubbiness, the group also look so much like the original Beatles. I mean, if you looked at the guys as each Beatle. Not at certain things you can't really affect like height. Because the Paul impersonator couldn't really help he was kinda short. I mean, he was at least a whole head shorter than the George impersonator... even in his high heeled boots he wore for his 'Let it Be' costume.
And the impersonators even had the Beatles' stage antics down. Paul's ickle dancing while he plays and flirting with the audience. John's talking to the audience and making ickle giggles. George's looking back and fourth between John and Paul and wandering about the stage. It was GREAT. I can't even count how many times I forgot it was just an impersonation band.
John kept saying, "ditty". Like, "Here's another little ditty." Then he said, "I wonder where the word ditty came from," after about the 4th time of saying the word. Nikki and I turned to each other and laughed. Dirty ickle boys. Just like the originals. (If you don't get that... it's okay, I had to explain it to both my mum and stepdad, and he usually get's most stuff like that.)
"It was you buzzing, you naughty boy!"
