April had to put her cat Minxie to sleep today. She had gotten thinner, then looked bloaty and would not eat or deficate (sp?), so upon taking her to the Vet, it was determined that she had Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIS). FIS is a highly contagious virus that slowly kills cells, kind of like human cancer. There is no cure, therefore treatment will not help. It ends in death. A shot can be given for prevention, but once another cat has been exposed, nothing can be done.
So, Chloe might have it as well. In fact, there is a great chance she does since she shared with Minxie the feeding dish and litter box, and the virus is contracted through saliva or fecal matter, or even inhalation.
I called the Vet to see if I should get Chloe checked, but since there is no proper testing for FIS, unless the cat undergoes traumatic surgery for tissue samples, I have to just watch for signs and hope that she hasn't gotten it.
Pray for my kitty.
