Faulty "Clock Genes" Potentially Linked to Major Depressive Disorder

Scientists determine that "clock genes" may play a role in major depressive disorder. Sleep patterns and circadian rhythms are badly disrupted. The scientists analyzed cyclic gene expression in the brains of normal people and those with major depressive disorder. “It’s as if they were living in a different time zone than the one they died in,” one researcher said of depression sufferers.

Well, I know that my sleep is often all kinds of messed up. Sleep problems are common in depressives. Maybe it's not so much a case of depression causing sleep problems as the two being interconnected.
