Brunch

Freshman year of college I threw an Easter brunch for my friends. Just because I didn't get to go home didn't mean I was going to miss one of the best meals of the year. It's been a tradition ever since. After that first year it wasn't often actually on Easter, and I did miss last year, but it's a tradition I rather enjoy.

Back in college I could use the dorm kitchens and have up to a couple dozen people or so. Now that I have an apartment I can't fit quite as many, though we did have 13 people here today. The brunch was fun, but I've really been enjoying the preparation as well. It gave me a reason to finally clean my apartment, which I've been meaning to do for awhile now. I got to use my stand mixer to make coffee cake, which makes that task quite a bit easier. I've been doing this long enough that I pretty much have the timing down, and I did enough ahead of time that I didn't have to rush.

I decided that since this was a sit down meal I would take the opportunity to actually get a set of dishes, which I'd also been wanting to do for quite some time, and not just serve on paper plates. I've been using the assorted mishmash of hand-me-down plates I took to college up to this point. And they work reasonably well, as long as I don't want to have a meal with more than 5 people. As this actually happens rather often, my new dishes are pretty handy. Also, it just makes me feel a bit more established in my home to have a complete set of dishes in a pattern of my choosing. When trying to explain this to the boy, the closest I could get was that it was like leveling up my household and my hostessing abilities. Though be warned: the Corelle outlet store is a rather dangerous place, especially when they're having sales. I think I'm set on dishes for now. I got so many that I had to pull my dishwasher out of its retirement.

Now I'm rounding out my day of domesticity by doing laundry and the last bit of cleaning up, possibly to be followed by reading in the chair that's now by my window. And despite the cleaning, I still have on my nice springy dress and the french braid Katy put in my hair. That's something else I need to learn how to do one of these days.
