Just in case there was any doubt...

You can tell a story based in the Star Wars universe where the outcome is known, and still make it compelling.

Lucas just didn't.

Zahn, on the other hand, just did.

"Survivors Quest" - takes place 3 years after The Hand Of Thrawn books. Luke and Mara take a trip out to Chiss space to see the remains of Outbound Flight (the project where in a bunch of Jedi masters were traveling outside the galaxy, but Palatine sent a force to intercept and kill them).

"Outbound Flight" - takes place between episodes 1 and 2. Anakin is 14, and he has a non-trivial role, but really isn't one of the main characters... mostly we just get some nice foreshadowing. this book tells the story of Outbound Flight, and answers the questions raised in "Survivors Quest". Additionally, we discover how Thrawn and Car'das get their starts. These two books were published in this order (reverse chronological), and I'd recommend reading them that way too.

I just got "Allegiance" today. Josh says it takes place between 4 and 5 and features our favorite red-haired Imperial. I haven't opened it up yet.

I don't own any of these. I got them all from the library. Someday I'm sure I will get around to buying them... but you'd probably have to wait on Josh getting a job for that one... and maybe until we buy a house as this apartment is way to cluttered already. :-)

I do, however, own the Hand of Thrawn books. If you haven't read those yet, you can borrow them.
